miso events: PIT ER PAT (thrill jockey) / FULBORN TEVERSHAM (pickled egg) / QUACK QUACK (run of the mill)
From Chicago, Pit er pat tiptoe over and deposit sneakily slinky bent jazzy tunes neath your pillow. The music soundtracks subsequent eerie dream escapes down geometrically unstable corridors, skeletal native American figures from your unconscious appearing in doorways which open to reveal you sleeping atop pyramids and then shrink to nothing as you step forward, hands on the swaying walls. Wild kaleidoscope of sound ensues and you wake with a start. praise for pit er pat: …"a brilliantly refreshing band" METRO - "you are swept up not only by the expertise but also in the sheer joyous physicality" 4/5 THE TIMES - "arresting music that is more commanding and immediate than that of most bands with twice the tools." TIME OUT. / Off Pickled Egg records and featuring notables Seb Rochford and cohorts from Acoustic Ladyland, Fulborn Teversham offer a mellower take musically, playing up the Tom Waits-ish carnival jazz without stinting on the emphatic progular squonk honking of the 'land. Vocalist Alice Grant deadpans the vocals on 'Off song' with the matter of factness of the truly p-and-ending-with-off, goes all wispy chanteuse on 'even if' as violin/key/sax serpents coil... A fat man in a fez throws the Four of Cups, reversed, to the table in front of you. / Miso's latest gift to the people [I mean this by the way, I don't recall a single duff Miso-hosted gig] concludes with Leeds based Quack Quack, ducks with marimbas recording a live album at Chichen Itza in Mexico on the Equinoxe, pastoral tale of love in a warm climate, lakes drying up and no flying south for the winter because the magnetic fields have just reversed - as usual. Bands like this highlight futility of words in discussing music. £6 in advance from www.ticketweb.co.uk 08700 600 100

GRABBA GRABBA TAPE / TITUS GEIN (pictured) / WALL STREET AMMUNITION HERO
Supported by 2 of my favourite Note-frequenting bands, & putting the 'mad' into Madrillenos, Grabba Grabba Tape look like Teletubbies force-fed amphetamines and strategically shaved & sound like a C64 soundtrack for a mental ladders and level game involving vocoder-voiced vermilion-skinned villains swinging fireballs at you. There are two of them, and this has drawn comparisons with Lightning Bolt & Daft Punk, presumably for numerical reasons as their music is only tangentially related [punk ethic, daft, squelchy beats, noise later]... one might as well liken them to legs, & what a fine pair, etc. Also soundtracking computer games, actually & figuratively, Titus Gein are one of the faves I teasingly alluded to earlier, & if I were to mimic Mr Shakespeare and try & count the ways I love Titus, I'd be forced to resort to 248 dimension maps & other conceptual aids. It is the finest electro-synth prog metal to slam your virtual motorbike into an underpass with, as well you know. Capping off the bill with less vocoder but all the throttle, WSAH are a bit après-punk knackered accelerator music which does you like in a Tom & Jerry cartoons where Tom gets his head used as a punch bag by the dog, making that 'fubbleeaaahbleeuuubleeaaahblee' noise you can emulate by letting your mouth go slack & shaking your head from side to side surprised. Which is what you'll do throughout this gig.

Kovorox: BLUE SABBATH BLACK FIJI / KYLIE MINOISE VS NACKT INSECTEN (KMVSNI) / FORDELL RESEARCH UNIT
Super (as in duper) underground label Kovorox point the hand blender at your head and hit the button a couple of times, making the blades rev unsettlingly. Blue Sabbath Black Fiji have been locked on the virtual Little Mermaid seashell car ride at EuroDisney and are full of ennui-de mer. They tote surf looking guitars and are anxious to noise out the anthropomorphisms and duff Caribbean cod-riddims. COD-riddims! You heard. All the way from Paris - *really* - and mangling their axes for your plaisir. Then KMVSNI are a special noise tag team partnership, Kendo Nagasaki and Giant Haystacks together at least to slap your head about the ring. That's right, your heads up their arses, and there is no Big Daddy to save you. Finally your broken remains are despatched to the Fordell Research Unit, where solemn faced beagles in white coats force you to chain smoke in a room full of lawnmowers, strimmers, sanders, edgers , industrial lathes and other drone equipment. Your fervid moans count for nothing - oh, and here's that hand blender dude again. Ever had one of those days?

Gargleblast Records: DESERT HEARTS (pictured) / ST DELUXE (pictured) / SERVANT
Desert Hearts released their highly acclaimed debut album 'Lets Get Worse' on Rough Trade in 2002. Two singles (and more glowing 4/5 reviews) followed - 'Ocean' on Belfast's No Dancing label and 'Gravitas/Hammer & Frogs' on Glasgow's Gargleblast Records. In 2006 the band returned to Chem19 studios in Glasgow with producer Andy Miller (who produced the first record, and who is also known for his work with bands such as Mogwai, Arab Strap and the Delgados) to record their second album 'Hotsy Totsy Nagasaki'. The album was released in October to rave reviews. Here's what the press have had to say: UNCUT 4/5 'The most exciting thing to come out of Belfast since Stiff Little Fingers'- Q 'A pleasingly sombre treat'- NME 'If you're looking for a band with a pulse Desert Hearts won't let you down. Exciting, angry, dynamic noise with gently caustic lyrics and some Pixies-esque rancour. Damn impressive'- MUSICWEEK 'One of the tastiest cakes to land on MW's plate for some time' (Hotsy)- ROCK SOUND 8/10 'One of the finest acts to come out of Belfast in a long long while. Investigate now!'- ALTERNATIVE ULSTER 5/5 'Hotsy Totsy Nagasaki is a devastating triumph of a record'- HOTPRESS 8/10 'Hotsy Totsy is a little beauty. Take it to your bosom, squeeze it tight. But not too tight - it's got claws'- THE IRISH NEWS 'Desert Hearts have managed to reclaim Ireland in the name of exciting, potential filled music'- GARY LIGHTBODY, SNOW PATROL 'Desert Hearts are a great Belfast band. They have the darkness of Joy Division and the low-slung humour of Pavement'. Single 'Hotsy' is on heavy rotation at Radio 1 and tracks have been played by the likes of Steve Lamacq, Huw Stephens, Phil Jupitus, Rory McConnell and even Gary Lightbody on his recent stand-in slot for Zane Lowe. The band have recently opened for acts such as The White Stripes, Bloc Party, The Breeders, The Hives, Snow Patrol (including their now legendary sold out London Koko show) and Arab Strap to name but a few...... / St Deluxe were formed by Jamie Cameron and Martin Kirwan. Sharing a love of indie ethics and ideals, vintage guitars and fuzz pedals, we decided to start up a band + record label. Taking inspiration from bands like sonic youth, my bloody valentine, teenage fanclub, dinosaur jr, jesus and the marychain, spacemen 3, mudhoney, etc plus labels like creation, sst, sub pop, dischord.. we enlisted the help of some friends - stuart kidd on drums, Stewart Niblock on bass and the Brian McEwan on synth bubble/occasional guitar feeback to complete the line up.. Moonshaker: KESSLER (pictured) / CORTEZ (pictured)
Fast moving indy rock from the moonshaker crew... kessler - "Another exciting gutiar band from Scotland, with a mix of modern jangly pop guitars and dark 80s synths. A Low Down Dirty Lack of Shame features keyboards from John Foxx-era Ultravox and the shouty lyrics and buzzy guitars of Dirty Pretty Things, while All My Tears is the heavy metalist of love songs. The Stone Tape Theory is an acoustic-led slower tune and On The Road simply crackles with intensity. Think Kasabian with fewer synths. These guys mean business.

THE BLACK CHAIN / D-RAIL (pictured) / CHRONICLES OF ADAM WEST (pictured) / FRIDAY NIGHT GUN FIGHT (pictured)
D-rail: Rocksound said this about them: "Being as much at home with showing off influence from earlier JR Ewing, Skycamefalling, Boysetsfire, Drowningman, Botch, Sensefield, Converge and tons more, they roll it all up into a tightly, well honed ball that is simply D-Rail, and not a copy band." Their record label, Calculated Risk describes them as: "Relentless technical metalcore that won't quit. Until your heart stops." I'm going to say: MOSH, tech, grind, thrash, good effort lads. / Chronicles Of Adam West: They describe themselves as "Technical noise for those with short attention spans, inspired by maths, mild confusion, and an inability to write a love song". To be honest that's not bad, I'm hearing Botch, Burnt By The Sun and Ion Dissonance and mosh-damage. / Friday Night Gun Fight: How to describe Gunfight? Hmmmmm. They have the tech metal jazz violence angle down, their bass player is the bendiest man in Scotland, Gus on vox is a legend and a very, very nice man, their drummer is unfeasible young to possess the skills he has and yet the band are perfectly capable of also post-rocking it in a manner that puts signed artists to shame.

OSTINATO (pictured) / SUPERUNKNOWN (pictured)
Ostinato is an Italian music term that means a recurring melodic fragment. It's also the name of a magnificent trio from the Virginia/Washington, D.C. region of the United States. Their third CD, "Chasing the Form," is loaded with numinous fragments of melody that intertwine into a masterpiece of modal persuasion. The group's format is traditional, utilizing guitar, bass and drums. The fey workmanship is accentuated with Hammond organ and various stringed instruments. Together they create a mostly wordless soundscape that suggests the gamut of emotions - from nearly unchecked anger to the deepest wells of happiness. Tracks like "Goal of All Believers" and "The Art of Vanishing" work a range of tempos. "Goal of All Believers" starts with hazy and heavy-hearted effect before Matthew Clark's drums kick in with machine-gun precision and cymbal-crashing urgency. David Hennessy's guitar settles into a hirsute quality before Clark shakes things up again. His halting cadence on "The Art of Vanishing" builds into a ferocious gallop, alternately slowing and amplifying before receding into a quiet rhythm that allows Hennessy's arpeggioed majesty to take hold. Bassist Jeremy Arn Ramirez anchors "Antiaircraft" with a snarly, druggy groove. Fractured voices and strums leave a hallucinatory effect, getting more intense as they get louder, coalescing into something grotesquely beautiful. Hennessy unleashes various textures throughout, all hauntingly epic. Other songs shape up in a more linear fashion, though they're no less striking. Hennessy's guitar on "Monkey Gestures" engulfs listeners with a heavily distorted effect that sounds at once dreamy and nightmarish. His ethereal work on "Between the Years" makes it a slower, enervating sonancy to behold. Given their numbers, the peaks that Ostinato climb on "Chasing the Form" are simply astounding. The album's title seems to say it all. They're continuously pursuing a form with endless possibilities. Only as exciting as this music is what conceivably lies ahead.

Is this music?: TIBI LUBIN (pictured) / KID CANAVERAL / THEE MOTHS
Tibi Lubin - Formed in the musical hideouts of Glasgow's not-too-distant past, Tibi Lubin continue to develop their idiosyncratic indie pop. Debut album 'I Don't See You as a Dead Girl' (Rev-Ola, 2004) was praised for its ingenuous beauty, garnering comparisons to the sweetie-pie minimalism of Young Marble Giants and The Marine Girls, and the perverse girl group dynamics of Slumber Party. A more sophisticated, resonant sound characterises 'Frankie Quinn', a 3 song single forthcoming on Hamburg's Aufgeladen & Bereit. / Kid Canaveral - "Evocative lyrics, super indie guitars and some striking girl/guy vocal dynamics, 'the Kids really are alright" Jock Rock - "Juicy, chewy pop-kids to savour, proving that life still twitches in this indie guitar-pop business." Paul Whitelaw, The Scotsman. / Thee Moths - "The umpteenth release from the one-man embodiment of all the music in the world, ever, is 'All the hits and more' and in it's 18 tracks drags the listener from the joyous nouveau-folk opening track 'Universe Prayer' via a vast range of musical genres. Spanning as the album does some decidedly uneasy listening, it also touches on some areas that people who thought they hated experimental music will cock an ear to. Take 'A Small Glass Ghost', its infectious drum loops and multilayered choral vocal, which is, effectively, pop music. 'Twilight Hands' is another example of lo-fi and pop married by catchy quality songwriting, while 'Thi Mi Sgiuth' is a Gaelic tune that sounds like it was recorded in a field, and were this a vinyl release, would have you checking your stylus for fluff. Of course, as Jarvis Cocker never said, 'This is Glitchcore' and an example of Thee Moths uncompromising approach to what they call music. And that is the pattern for the span of these recordings - moments of genius, consistently inspired beautiful melodies, and determination to make whatever music they want no matter how poppy, pensive or painful it may be. The first 10 old tracks lead us to some new material including 'Dundee is a Smothering Darkness' (harsh on smothering darknesses I'd say) which is, actually an upbeat jangly sort of lo-fi tune - contrasting 'The Bright Sun', a claustrophobic slab of menacing glitchcore. Which, given Thee Moths track record is exactly what you'd expect. " Entry £3

DEAD OR AMERICAN (pictured) / EX-WIVES (pictured) / HYENA
Dead or American: ...if they can keep this standard up then they could well be your new favourite band. A list of the bands you can hear running through Dead or American's fingers reads like a history lesson in underground alt rock over the last 20 years: Fugazi, The Pixies, Slint, The Melvins, Helmet, Cave-In, Hot Water Music. That they wear these influences on their sleeve gives them a weird musical freedom, drifting from alternative rock, to a more drawn out, sprawling sound, and then over to all-out hardcore. Despite these shifts, the music is still highly focused and there is an overall feel to all of the songs that unites them under the Dead or American umbrella. / Ex Wives : noisy, noisy, NOISY, a filthy, shouty dirty riffin beast which rocks like a good'un. Similarities can instantly be drawn with the all those Albini produced bands, especially Big Black, but Ex Wives have a grittiness about them and you'd like to think this is an extra spicy ingredient added due to being brought up in Glasgow on a diet of deep fried Mars Bars and religious divides. If you want something to wipe away the smug self-satisfied nausea induced by bands peddling so called "classy grown-up pop", then Ex WIves are the ones. / Hyena: a punk rock band from Glasgow. Ben Reynolds drifts by, as sonic jellyfish in deep space, porpoises unknown bat fins and wheel away... Meursault stands on beach with towel on head, drawing lines of equations in the sand describing these great interstellar journeys [someone has to keep their feet on the ground], but the fractions become unwieldy and the conflict of homesick laments for diminishing other worlds and dimensions leaves Meursault lost on a small stretch of land, head awash with mammalian laments.
