BASTARDS OF SCIENCE / DENNIS LAW Jr. / NOON LAYER DRIVE
Bastards of Science: bastards of description more like! These guys are hard to pin down in any concise way so prepare yourself for some bullshit. Essentially, they're a punk-metal band with a sense of humour, yet a sense of humour that doesn't get in the way of the force of full powered rock. Hang on...i did it! Think black flag meets thin lizzy and iron maiden on a mastodon message board. / Dennis Law jr. - "Tam says we play alternative spazzy rock, but I think we sound a little like Depeche Mode on Dulcolax." i think you've both got a valid point! And the list of influences sounds about right too... Wedding Present, Dead Kennedys, Radiohead, Eels, Weezer, Prince... / Noon Layer Drive: four piece, hard rock alternative, indirectly inspired by a desolate metropolis they know as Milton Keynes. music with an undertow of passion, angst and sentiment that strips the flesh of anything resembling the idealistic holocaust from which their background descends. The name is taken from a baron wasteland within the perimeters of their hometown. Signposted yet with no more to offer than 20sq ft of tarmac and a mound of rubble (used to prevent travellers setting up encampments on this would be Promised Land) the band saw it as a great opportunity to facilitate the imagination for what might be. What the numbing reality eventually offered created music that reflected their observations. Songs like Walking The Glass Mile and Down On Me lay testament to this. The band has had imperative line up changes over its three span and it even began life as a five piece, only to realise that deadwood can only float for so long, the unit now stands firmly on its feet as four. Gary Murphy (vocals, guitar) Paul Ford (guitar) Sam Farrell (bass) and Ben Hallett (drums). First generation citizens of their suburban social catastrophe all came together through a decrepit hug of what still is a dwindling music scene there and despite the fact they were in various lesser guises, it planted a seed that would in later years develop into something special. So what does all that give you? A colossal, scything yet endearing sound, made from nothing more than drums, bass, two guitars and a vocal but standing nothing short of gigantic, the music carves intrusive hard rock riffs into your bones and shot blasts your soul with an impenetrable mass of furore, skull crushing bass and jackhammer beats

CORIOLIS / THE NUNS / GDANSK
Wordy miserablists Gdansk resurface with expansive, lugubrious tunes, somewhat Morrisseyesque, with well-drawn giant canvas backdrop Someone notes this on their web bit: 'in "the quest for the callipygian ideal" you guys are definitely life's victors' which may be referring to a Gdansk song, or the writer may just be calling them perfect arses – either way, you have to admire any group that stimulates polysyllabic approbation. Nice and heavy does it from Coriolis, on the small selection of back catalogue I sampled while typing this. 'Glitter eyes' for example – I am forced to mention The Wedding Present and Pavement in the same sentence, which two workers of genius existing in the same space event may cause the collapse of the cosmos… Proper guitar crunch [my day job is at ben & jerry's] and vocals that state Weegie. The further we get from the 90s the more like a lost golden era it do seem. Such introspection might lead one to the convent, and traipsing through the cloisters by way of third party to the frolics tonight come The Nuns, four chaps originating from Manchester and winding a trail across the North… Classic Rodney Stewart vocals and spanky Spiral Scratchy guitars froth like soap wearing out in a dirty nun joke. There's more than enough action tonight to get you off your smashing backside and boogying.

ACHREN (pictured) / DIONYSUS (pictured) / DIAMANTHIAN
DGlasgow based Achren's brand of metal is crushingly heavy and uncompromising. Formed in early 2003 with the aim of forging raw, filthy heavy as fuck metal, their music is a mixture of all extreme metal- Black Metal Screams, Death Metal Growls, Thrashy riffs, Black Metal riffs & pounding drums; everything raw, powerful and heavy. "Brutally technical death/black/thrash with the shredding and violence turned up to 10... a fearsome live act" - Metal Hammer / Dionysus, A 5 Peice metal band from Glasgow with influences from a wide range of styles including black / melodic / death / doom and power and fantasy inspired lyrics. After numerous line-up changes the band are now in the process of writing and recording their 3rd full album. "Glasgow six-piece Dionysus method of playing 'black metal' manages to be almost equal measure bathory bludgeon and power metal widdle and still sounds cool. Uncharacteristically down to earth - for their genre rather than geographical origins, in Glasgow - Dionysus confess to loving cheese but without heartfelt shame. Thoroughly enjoyable headbang-worthy stuff." Paul Schwarz, Terrorizor Magazine / Diamanthian: *Best Unsigned Band (Twice) in Terrorizer Magazine's Readers' Poll! Killer brutal Death Metal from England! A fresh and imaginative blend of Blackened technicality and raw Underground brutality with some Doom-ish atmosphere. Formed in Liverpool from the ashes of DESOLATE SILENCE in the late '90s. Their debut album was recorded during a tour of Finland with MAPLE CROSS in mid-2004, with one "J. Offalmangler" (aka Jeff Walker, from CARCASS) as producer!

Veee Deee: From Tokyo, Japan, not a Japanese band you understand... But one British Chap on drums (Thomas) and a Canadian on guitar (Clay) playing improv psychedelic noise rock. Two guys who, when combined, sound like five but care less than one. Your love's glistening lips, parting, not so she can smile, but so she can douse you in screaming hot light. ASHTRAY NAVIGATIONS (pictured) / NALLE + BEN REYNOLDS / EYE SHAKING KINGDOM
Ashtray Navigations/Nalle & Ben Reynolds/ Eye Shocking Kingdom A while ago I gushed that bands like Ashtray Navigations are 'pushing at the peripheries until they collapse.' Leeds-based Phil Todd continues to stride through the rubble/flattened barbed wire/ whatever peripheral metaphor works for you, creating sounds that might be cosmic winds, oil pump clank, free-squonk honky tonk or simple Santana-style guitar noodling. Abstracted, diffuse and impossible to pin down with anything as conventional as words. Ben Reynolds, collaborator extraordinaire, joins up with avant-Finn pixie drone cohort Nalle for what promises to be extremely beguiling and a bit disturbed – like Luna Lovegood in the Harry Potter film casting a music spell or something topical and magic. Expect tinkle, hummm, voices and guitar, mossy brook style. Eye Shocking Kingdom: I can't top the blurb from the Volcanic Tongue website for this 'local outfit'... "The sound is super-heavy, with dense clusters of protesting keyboard generating escape velocities over space warping feedback and machine noise." Skill! Get along to this gig or live in the 1960s Beat Explosion for the rest of your sorry life.

DANICA / CITIES AND SKYLINES / SOL DIABLOS
Cities and Skylines were formed in April 2006 although the first 6 months were slow for them. Phil Flynn, Bryan Mcguire, and David Napier had the job of recruiting a new bassist and drummer, after a few months searching they found what they were looking for in David Dunsmuir who had been involved in previous projects, Ali Richardson was brought in to play session drums in late 2006. The band then concentrated on writing new material which was later recorded at Chime Studios in March 2007. A 4 track demo entitled "534" was the end product of 3 long days in the studio with the help of Ross Mcgowan (sound engineer). Sol Diablos: Colossal bass, ground shaking drums, jaw dropping guitar and lung busting vocals, All 'n' all the most fun you can have with your clothes on!

KUNT AND THE GANG (London) (pictured) / THE PLIMPTONS (pictured)
PROPER MUCK, NO KIDS! A double fister of sex offenders list-signing smut-pop… K&TG are jumping on in leaps and bounds – the debut album title 'I have a little wank and I have a little cry' [speaking to, well, at least 49% of the population] offers some notion of the delights within. As well as being featured in classic gentlemen's magazines 'Knave' and 'Fiesta', Kunt actually tosses off splendidly scurrilous electro-filth-pop, like if Richard Stilgoe just kind of snapped one day and started singing about how he desperately had to have Sarah Brightman throughout the 1970s and how it turned his beard grey with impotent longing. And there would be no cavilling with regard to which beard was being referred to, the dirty, dirty Kunt. If Half Man Half Biscuit were plying a more electronic furrow, if this improbable mix of agrarian and technological be allowed, then we might approaching the disorganised fury of The Plimptons. No one is safe, least of all the band themselves. They are here to Plimp your ride with songs that call for adjectives associated with humour – cutting, lacerating, biting etc – that also double up as really sore sounding acts of violence. Because really good comedy/music is a bit disgusting sometimes.

is this music? FRIGHTENED RABBIT / ODEON BEAT CLUB / WE WERE PROMISED JETPACKS (pictured)
Someone reviewing an Odeon Beat Club gig from this very venue said that they have an 'honest rhythm section'. Better than a mendacious rhythm section, I suppose, although I'm at a loss as to what this means. Did the writer lose a wallet and have it handed back by the bassist? Hmmm. Perhaps they meant no frills, straight ahead, direct, all of which could be applied to the OBC riddim people. It all serves to bolster the Bluetones-ish fragility of Paul [singer] – people hankering for the pop rock thrill thing will already know and dig the Odeon beat Club. Now. "You're the shit and I'm knee deep in it" is, categorically, one of my favourite lyrics of all time, and I have a cave near the Dead Sea full of such lists. Listing band members like 'Flesh – Goat curry' is only going to get you more entries on the scrolls… So let it be written! Frightened Rabbit are excellent, kind of driving up the west coast music, long views over to Harris and the sun exiting a cloud in a geometric ecstasy. The song 'be less rude' is what I'm listening to as I type this, dewy-eyed with nostalgia and marvelling at the simple power of a few chords, a nifty melody and an appropriate sentiment. Also on, we were promised jetpacks are astonishingly good – well, that makes it sound like I was expecting them to be gash, but anyway – 'quiet little voices' for example – it's a frenzy of instruments playing different things at the same time, really exciting and springy, slightly mad vocals and all the joy of people possessed by a moment and barely able to contain the emotions in a few minutes of a pop tune. The end of it suggests a UFO removing the band in a glare of white light and a pine-flattening gale. They have bonkers hats too. Get in.

SANCTUARY FIRE / THE CONTRADICTIONS (pictured) / JIMMY JIVE
DThe Contradictions are making music in an attempt to stop the defining statement of this generation being "I bet you look good on the dancefloor". The music is exactly what it is. A no-wave explosion of the most beautiful and disturbing noises ever heard, drenched in layers of distortion and powered by an incessant yet complicated tribal beat. All this with the poetry of the 21st century (Loneliness, Isolation, Anger, Despair) condensed into mere sky scraper sized choruses. / Jimmy Jive: "fresh faced emo type rock with shades of Nirvana and Pearl Jam" - Scottish Music Network - "Catchy wee funky guitar riffs and bass lines" - Gill Brammer

ARMY OF FLYING ROBOTS (pictured) / + GUESTS
Army of Flying Robots: one of the UK's brightest underground grindcore/hardcore bands, expect lots of screaming over lots of blastbeats and very dirty guitar noise. "Army of Flying Robots .... with two tracks of extremely caustic grind/metallic hardcore with cackled vocal screams over blasting speeds with dissonant, noisy guitar work that retains a sense of control and hits on a couple of thick and in your face hardcore chord progressions on occasion. "Explanation" is initially slower and more spacious than the relentless speeds of "In the Shadow of Swine", but its chunkiness is definitely contrasted by some extreme blasts as well, despite closing with an intense surge of melody and a quaint piano outro. Nicely done."
