Dicelines: THE DEADBEATS (pictured) / THE MERCHANTS (pictured) / THE MANDRAKES / THE AMAZING MAGPIE
The Deadbeats: 5-piece from Manchester who won this year's Glastonbury Unsigned competition, playing 3 times at the festival - including a slot on the Other Stage. They also featured at Bestival on the Isle of Wight in September & have been hailed by the NME as "good time rock'n'roll fun." / "Like Kings of Leon trapped in a bucket bong…" NME / "Febrile country-blues rock…" Mojo / The Merchants: Glasgow 5-piece define the true meaning of rock'n'roll. With influences listed as The Stooges & The Ramones, the band started out in all the usual haunts of Glasgow's music scene, & have continued to progress into a well established unsigned band with a loyal following. One of Glasgow's most promising unsigned bands of the moment.

Joy Promotions: THE LAST PROJECT (pictured) / DRESDEN (pictured) / THE DOWN AND OUTS (pictured)
To many people it's always been obvious why 'trad' songwriting of the Ooh la La's, Small Faces numbers style, remains appealing. It's like good short stories,or perfect Polaroids; telling a tale in an excitingly brief manner when it's done well. Although Lee Mavers' influence looms like a big Scouse Spinning Jenny over a bunch of bands currently plying their trade, including TLP, this isn't a bad thing but a great thing. I also mention Steve Marriott's old lot because they had an experimental edge that TLP share, a willingness to push their own boundaries that suggests they don't really think they have any. Keeping it even more back-to-basics, Dresden are city-flattening rock n'roll, blitzkrieg bopping bulls in the china shop, gleeful jam kicker-outers who care little for voguish hair or threads. Not a natty Jake Shears hat in sight, thank f*ck. Topping off this evening Victoria sponge sandwich of delights is -are? - down and outs. They tote vintage guitars and sing Ray Davieshly, but not slavishly; they abandon the quest for authentic 60's dust (as Mavers attempted, according to muso legend) by leaning more towards the exciting later Manc spunky guitar attack of Buzzcocks to go with the whimsy. Punches my button, anyway. Well, shake it up, baby, now.

ROLLER / MAGDALENA / WEIRD / ANGEL
Magdalena, Magdalena, Magdalena, Magdalena, - heeeeey! Magdalena - are an interestingly all over the place band, Sonic Youthful spag-outs trailing on from trippy ambient noodlings, with the breathy but not annoyingly burd-ish Steph Wilson intoning delicate but experience-tempered sentiments among it. We have Krakatoan eruptions of noise bustling in the hedgerow and a knack for super-melodie. This is what indie rock should be, a bit haphazard but neatly and tightly focussed. And on a similar tip... Weird are back! From a hiatus aimed at doing a bit of early-doors spring-cleaning - an unintentional music reference there - Weird are currently making some tunes with delicious chimey guitar, like icicles melting off drainpipes on the way into work, with big woo! Mind the black ice fuzzed up choruses. It sounds easy - it is when you know how.

Lazygroove Promotions: IN ERNEST (pictured) / THE WAY OF THE EXPLODING FIST (pictured)
In Ernest - Three strong boys, one hellish wind beaten night, two french fancies & more buggery than you could shake your fat sweaty fists at..... These are the circumstances in which In Ernest came to be. Ferg or "The Orange Leopard" as he's fondly addressed by closest friends and family, plays phat bass riffs so sweet- that rain falls from the sky whenever he handles his huge hard instrument(many beleive that the unexplained downpour can only be down to the tears of our lord Jesus, in the presence of something truly beautiful). Craig "The Face" Kneale happens to play zee drums in this trio, & has more power in his puny pipes than both Dolf Lundgren & Chuck Norris combined(Duck Norgren for talkings sake). Why "The Face"? Well, all doubt would be vanquished in one look at this demi-gods complexion. The self made face mask he wears during ventures to perhaps work or practice are only to prevent hideous road accidents. Much like ships to a Siren, traffic has been known to veer off the road distracted by Craigs chiseled cheek bones & earthy glow. Brendan "Jam Jar" Jones is the final ingredient in our musically splendiforous concoction. He happens to play guitar & does a bit of singing, but where his true talent lies is in 4 words...."blood, sugar, sex, magic". Commonly believed to be a Red Hot Chilli Peppers album- the 4 words infact represent a sexual act so rare that only one man alive holds the key to the truth. Thats right, el Brendo. The said act involves blood, sugar, sex and magic...perhaps not even in that order?! its mindblowing as just a forethought. If you live anywhere near the fair city of Glasgow, why not go along to a gig? The boys are extemely approachable if you would like an autograph or perhaps a signed photo for a sick relative. Go on! You silly sausage!!! / The Way of the Exploding Fist - blend... "Glassjaw / Jetplane Landing / Sparta / Hot Water Music...So we have been TOLD." check out their tunes on their myspace webspace...well worth a listen!

A REBEL'S GUIDE / AMOK (pictured) / LITTLE PANIC (pictured) / CERTAIN DEATH (pictured)
A Rebel's Guide is THE Scottish metal band for those with an imagination. The 4 musicians from Hamilton create musical fusion from an endless amount of influences & stylings, & are not intimidated by those that simply follow. The band has been together for almost a year & is currently promoting their new "head wide open (eyes slammed shut)" CD. / Amok - A 5-piece thrash metal band from Glasgow, forged in early 2004. Bored with the current metal scene & the never-ending emo & nu-metal acts turning up, Amok decided to forget the new & go back to the golden days of the 80s, when thrash was the extreme in metal. Inspired by bands from the Bay Area such as Testament, Exodus, Heathen alongside other extreme bands like Slayer, Sepultura & Kreator, Amok shred out the fastest & heaviest songs without having to downtune or turn to effects. The distinct Amok sound can be summed up in a single word: Thrash. Driven by chunky, palm-muted riffage, fast shredding, ear crushing drumming & piercing, in your face vocals, the final product is Amok's distinctively heavy, yet immediately accessible sound. Through hard work, intense practice & a rigorous gigging schedule over the past year (including a date at well known venue "The Garage"), Amok have amassed a solid set of songs & a dedicated fan base, in the process building a well respected name for themselves throughout the Glasgow metal scene. / Little Panic are progressive rock, hardcore grunge & Jazz fused together to create an energetic new sound that has begun to excite crowds all over Scotland. Created in Autumn of 2004 Little Panic was a collection of musicians from the west coast of Scotland who came together from different bands to write the music they wanted to hear!! 6 months, 3 singers and 2 demos down the line they were ready to take their fresh style of heavy, melodic, grooving, complicated madness into the wild. / Certain Death are from Fife, Scotland. The band originaly started as a side project of 'the exploited' guitarist steed but are now a full time concern. Steed & brother jnr then went to local gigs to cherry pick the meanest hombres in the kingdom of fife. With twin vocals of murderous intensity allied to a unique, heavily rhythmic metal the sound is distinctive as a signature. They recently played as special guests at the stavanger punk festival in norway alongside some giants of the punk world & caused such a stir that they were asked to play the second night as well due to popular demand. On their return they discovered they'd been short listed for one of the biggest festivals in the UK; T in the Park. They blasted their way through 700 competitors to the final 12 & laid waste on the festival's new talent stage. The band are currently recording & hope to play a town near you, baby...

An evening of belting rock from all points on the rock spectrum from all points geographical. Some Young Pedro, a three piece hard punk band from the Borders - of Scotland, not the music department of the global book-hawking corporation. Some Young Pedro play hard. Errors make lovely music, they use electronic devices to make tunes wi' a bit of guitar chucked in as well, and live on Mogwai's rockaction label. Findo Gask: hail from Fife. They are an enjoyable band with their debut release pending on the Neil's Never Wrong fantastico Too Many Fireworks label (hearth-warming home of Titus Gein and Flying Matchstick Men, among others...)They'll be playing psychedelicswampafolkoustica; if they manage to de-camp from a Highland glade and sort their shroom-addled heads, out their set may rock a little as well.

Dead Anyway Entertainment: RED MAN WALKING (pictured) / ERIC EUAN (pictured) / EMER / AFTER CHRISTMAS
I get absurdly pleased when I skim through the band's press kits and someone is quoting stuff I've written. Imagine my joy when that happened with two of the Aberbands from tonight! Red Man Walking: 'Though commonly mistaken as a play on words for a famous movie title, Red Man Walking have been anything but mistaken for a thrilling and memorable act. One reviewer [that was me, reader,] described them thus... "... their music goes straight for the jugular with a lethal dose of riff-heavy drive tempo rock, with intelligently phrased lyrics and harmonies. Annoying amalgamated band name: Queens of the Idlewild Frontier." Make of that what you will,' Almost as exciting as actually hearing the band. I was dead pleased to note that Eric Euan would be playing again, because they name-check Cable and the Wedding Present, and I love both of them too. The same press kit quote said: 'This band has three guitarists and someone [reader, that was me too] once said that "this bands driving epic rock histrionics surge and jump like giant horses chasing surfers!" ' Except I used a possessive apostrophe in the right place, thank you. I also said that their song 'Techla' was really, really great, all relentless guitars and harmonised vocals swooping about like whizz-crazed sparrows. Hope they're still playing it. So, next time you read about After Christmas, watch out for the phrase.

MANGARA / THE FEBRUARY SOLUTION (pictured) / THIS FAMILIAR SMILE
Mangara are a four-piece band who've excitingly gone from being 'light pop rock' to a harder in more ways combo. From Glasgow, natch, they've been going since 2002 and have kept the sme line-up, which means they'll be gnat's chuff tight and quite a prospect for a grand show. Their tunes still reveal a predilection for 'uplifting chorus's and infectious melodies.' What is it with press kit people and their aberrant apostrophes? No matter. Herewith The February Solution to make dialogue a futile endeavour. Tar-heavy guitars broil lightly in a porridge of lava, vocals intoning speculations about the universe as it collapses into a black hole sun around you. Hoof! Thisfamiliarsmile state candidly that they 'don't know how to label ourselves, so you people can label us whatever you want, we don't mind.' [Sound of blurb scribe rubbing hands with glee...] Heh heh... Thisfamiliarsmile may hate punctuation but they seem to dig syncopation, alinear drums abruptly erupting around rattling guitars smacking off each other like a cutlery drawer over a spin-cycling Hotpoint 5000. A sunny day real estate snapshot for you there, and it's emo via math-rock hardcore in an enervating way, not emo by numbers in a big yawn way, cheers.

THE LOW MIFFS (pictured) / THE NEEDLES (pictured) / THE BEAT TRAP (pictured)
The Low Miffs have interesting words, ideas and a pleasingly high level of Bruce Springsteen referred to in their tabloidish website. "Also sprach shareholder"... Heh. And - hey! - the 13th Note gets a name-check! It's always exciting to know when you've been Miffed. Here from the jaggy edge of very exciting terminal velocity exciting guitar come The exciting Needles. In fact, if you've got a minute: I haven't been as excited listening to some downloads for ages. Bit of a post excitement anti-climax, but seriously, words fail me. I'd not heard The Needles before, and I'm smitten. Plus their site's a well-formatted delight, and the tunes are wound tight and, as far as I'm concerned, it's outtasight. Thebeattrap - what IS this, spurn the space bar month? - don't have any tunes on their website, but they appear to wielding guitars in an exciting way, so three out of three - as Meatloaf singularly failed to put it - ain't bad.

Jockrock: Is This Music? Christmas Party: FLYING MATCHSTICK MEN
Happy Xmas from the mag that flies the flag for all things Scottish, musical and indie - which would make "schmindie" as a composite noun, but they thought of it first and wave that banner proudly. Anyway, no jangly parka wearing here, we have the hotly sexed and long-term favourites of ours Flying Matchstick Men glitzing into the basement to play their hotly sexy amalgamusic. Having watched a band develop from something a bit ramshackle to this snarling disco beast with soft Sunday morning under the duvet with a couple of friends aftermaths, moody publicity photos notwithstanding, FMM hold a special place in our hearts and trousers. Among the traditional Jockrock awards, DJs, features and Mr McHugh offering a service far too many bands are indebted to, FMM could well be the finest gift you could hope for this yuletide, - god bless us, everyone.
