Figure 5: "Glasgow's best kept secret." TimesOut "A hot as hell melting pot of The Strokes & Stones and a little Coral in-between." The List "... from out of those feathered mops and tight trousers comes a raucous melodic sound complete with drawling vocals, taught riffs and sunkissed harmonies. The frontman is as cool as Casablancas, clutching the mic stand and filling the venue with his gutsy growl while psychedelic guitar storms, super speed rhythms and throbbing basslines surround him. It makes for a stunning set of slightly eccentric and utterly stunning guitar pop that's simply begging for the big-time." The List "Figure 5 have a unique sound that falls somewhere between the garage psych of the 60s San Francisco and The Doors LA to the modern pop sensibilities of The Las and The Coral with a bit of Billy Childish sex-punk." Music News Scotland "It's like The Buzzcocks jamming with The Small Faces, and that can't be a bad thing." Daily Record. "If Figure 5 had gone to art school and had matching haircuts we would be talking about summer festivals and the next Franz Ferdinand by now" Evening Times "Utterly infectious guitar pop that's begging for the big time" The List / The Aspherons: are stunningly good. Obviously tightly rehearsed & very enthusiastic, their twin guitar interplay is back with inventive rhythmic work and, crucially, control of their songs and the effort required to transmit them to what actually turned into a curiously mixed crowd of hipsters mingling with punters from the upstairs bar. These important talents suggest to me that the four-piece are on their way to significantly larger stuff than can be allowed for by the cramped confindes of what is the spatial equivalent of a cupboard under drury street. The X1: Is This Music? - "Evidently The X1 are walking it like they talk it, and there's clearly more to their maniacal folk punk than just some Libertines comparisons or blatant noise merchantry" Evening Times - "Energetic punk pop from a band who've been compared with The Libertines, Maximo Park and The Futureheads." Artrocker - "...sharp, fast and inspired...nifty way with actual guitar tunes..." Jim Gellatly (Xfm Scotland) - "...think of the libertines with their heads screwed on..."

miso events: BLINDFOLD / SKOUD (pictured) / + Miso DJs
Blindfold: it seems there are no bounds to the wonderful music coming out of iceland at the moment. acts like bjork, mum and sigur ros have long been favourites of mine so imagine my delight when I came into possession of a record which not only combines existing elements of all three acts but adds even more of ‘that icelandic magic thing’ that makes these artists so incredibly moving to listen to. so, all that aside. blindfold is the creation of biggi Hilmarsson (who you might know from his other band ‘ampop’). the live incarnation of the band also includes fellow reykjaviker’s stafrænn hákon, svenni and occasionally jonni. I reckon they’re going to explode next year so come see them face to face while you still have the chance for this special uk exclusive! Simon Koudriavtsev aka skoud was born in St Petersberg, Russia in 1982 to a family of notorious russian actors. since then he’s been perfecting the russian-swedish-northumbrian electronica sound which stands him out from the mass of bland electronic music that seems to be sweeping the world at the moment.

***GIG OF THE MONTH***
YOU ALREADY KNOW / SHUTTER
You Already Know: "Music is a great energizer. It's a language everybody knows." So said Bill Hicks. Truth is, it's the only language everybody knows. Music heals, rejuvenates and conquers all. You Already Know are based in Glasgow, Scotland. The line-up of Allan Swan (singer, guitarist and primary songwriter), Keef Thorburn (guitar, backing vocals), Stef Lach (bass) and Dunc Sweeny (drums) started gigging in April 2005 and have produced a body of work that will see them hit great heights throughout 2006. Their songs are held together by a rhythm section that approaches Fugazi in terms of precision, intricate expression and versatility. Allan and Keef take the traditional "lead + rhythm guitar" blueprint and ignore it completely, offering consistently captivating new ways of pushing what a 4 piece rock band can sound like. The bittersweet lyrics are laced delicately over hugely powerful music, a genre hopping culmination of the individual band members musical tastes. You Already Know have created their own musical space that can reference Nirvana's "All Apologies", Tool's "Stinkfist", Kyuss' "Demon Cleaner" and Gang Of Fours "What We All Want" in equal measure: a breadth of scope that is very much their own. Their limited debut 7" is due to land early 2006, with an album to follow later on in the year. A Scottish tour is being put together, with a full UK jaunt and European dates to follow.

WILDHOUSE (pictured) / CONSCIOUS PILOT (pictured)
The Wildhouse are one of those bands whose reputation precedes them. They can't help it; they have had to learn to accept.FICCA, the current single from the psychedelic trio, has singer Paul spitting unintentionally on the microphone, but it injects some life into a band who at first seemed a bit stagnant considering the hype. It launches a frenzied assault on his guitar which ends only when his fingers draw blood and the pain is too much.Let's Get Married! is liquidized funk and has drummer Sheila McGee thumping her heart out as she takes centre stage for the first and last time. She stands for the entire set yet only gets three minutes of glory. Let's Get Married! is dark yet enticing. The guitar hooks seize the ears and attention. Second guitarist Pete Simpson opens Paint The Whole Day Red. Yet a minute into the finale Paul appears from nowhere and is still able to scream the venue to the ground. The gig only finishes when the band literally fall to the floor and admit they can't take any more. It's a sight we thought we'd never see. Seonaid Masson, Daily Record

CHEVRON / FROGPOCKET / & dj's (incl. Jonnycomputerock)
Chevron: "That old phrase about how talent borrows whereas genius steals certainly rings true throughout Everythings Exactly The Same, Chevrons stunning debut album. Few are the producers who would view rave-era Hoover noises and a snatch of Kate Bush (Stop sniggering!) as potential bedfellows. Fewer still have the skill to pull it off, but Chevron, AKA Jonathan Valentine, clearly has talent and imagination to spare. If you can imagine a middle ground between Plaid, DJ Ruptures reconstructed ragga and the mystical techno of the Red Planet label, then you have the vaguest idea what to expect – but music this original and inspiring deserves to be heard, not just imagined." Dave Stenton..... "Everythings Exactly The Same" is due for release on Planet Mu Records on February 14th. You can listen to samples of tracks at www.planet-mu.com http://www.chevvers.com /  frogpocket - Frog Pocket is a name to stay - this is the fifth album by the very same guy that also does the Mouthmoth labels (and the fourth Frog Pocket on Mouthmoth). He calls it 'uplifting happy-sad splatterbeat folk-electronica magic" - it might be a very appt description. Frog Pocket samples the hell out of folky, country & western, fiddle songs and adds his either upbeat or downbeat rhythms to it, smears a dash of synths somewhere. 'The Stare' is one such track, topheavy of sounds, a fiddle, banging rhythms, breakbeats everywhere. But unlike what one might expect with such an overload, it's never too much or too cliche. Also, it's easily followed by such a melancholical piece as 'Omulad'. It seems like a lot of these things fit together very well. This is one of the better Frog Pocket albums I know - consistent throughout. And some pieces, like the aforementioned 'Omulad' could very well be put on any upcoming Morr Music compilation. -Frans de Waard

Tends to lurch between styles and emotions more often than you may be used to hearing. / Galchen - "An experiment in guitars, synth loops, samples and tight ass rythms. There is a certain numerical, scientific edge to their music, which is completely insrtumental, but they possess a rythm section of such quality that the whole experience they offer is well worth seeing."

AMOK / THE DEADITES / SELF MADE MAN (pictured)
Amok: Inspired by bands from the Bay Area such as Testament, Exodus, Heathen alongside other extreme bands like Slayer, Sepultura and Kreator, Amok shred out the fastest and heaviest songs without having to downtune or turn to effects. The distinct Amok sound can be summed up in a single word: Thrash. Driven by chunky, palm-muted riffage, fast shredding, ear crushing drumming and piercing, in your face vocals, the final product is Amok's distinctively heavy, yet immediately accessible sound. Through hard work, intense practice and a rigorous gigging schedule over the past year (including a date at well known venue "The Garage"), Amok have amassed a solid set of songs and a dedicated fan base, in the process building a well respected name for themselves throughout the Glasgow metal scene.

Puny Human Promotions: DRESDEN (pictured) / THE HEDRONS (pictured) / MIA / FOKARA
Dresden - Dresden play rock and roll the way it should be - dangerously loud and so downright dirty it'll leave you needing a shower. For fans of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, MC5, The Stooges and Primal Scream (without the dancey bits). The Hedrons - Continuing tonight's Denim and Leather theme are The Hedrons - four ladies with a passion for gritty, sleazy rock music. Influences range from Iggy and the Stooges to Joy Division and the FooFighters. MIA: combine the effects driven tendencies of Rage Against the Machine, the vocal melody of Incubus, the kind of noise levels you'd expect from the Deftones and the polished hard rock spirit of the Foo Fighters. A somewhat eclectic mix of styles best summed up simply as ROCK. Fokara - Fokara have gathered much acclaim in a short space of time, their current career highlight being a well received gig at the Carling Academy as part of the Emergenza contest. Edible Audio presents: CO-EXIST / THEORY OF MINE / THE ARSONIST
Co-Exist: "Scotlands finest grind-caked pitbull metal band have finally done it and put out the full length debut their demos warned would someday devastate us. With ex-Medulla Nocte howler Paul Catten adding his distintive yelp to vocalising drummer Quzzy's raspy bark, Co-Exist roll their rabid death machine forward with before only-hinted-at force and confidence on this 40-odd minute monster of an underground metal album. Abrasive as paint stripper, the once three-piece powerhouse tag team effortlessly between gut-churning, neck-invigorating riff chugs and face battering blastbeats and snare assaults creating a concoction which reminds of Today is the Day, Brutal Truth and even a finer Fear Factory, yet restrains its own distinctive flavour. Never a band to mess around, Co-Exist slam their way through eighteen dynamically written cuts without once overstaying their welcome. As the hidden cover of Sabbaths 'A National Acrobat' finally brings things to a close in invigorating, inspiring style, the feeling of freedom is positively palpable. Unconstrained by trends and generic tendancies, these 'Glasgae Coonts' put grind, hard, metal and core together just how it suits them - which suits just fine when the result comes out as fresh, frisky and ferocious as 'Surgical...' . Surely not an album destined to be a long sought-after enigma, this is just the belated beginning."
