aturday 01 - GIG OF THE MONTH
GREEN PEPPERS / ALLY KERR / TAKATA / STUART KIDD
Solo project from ex Soup Dragon Jim McCullough, Green Peppers has been sounding nicely evolutional - like the invigorated BMX Bandits, life beats on, Green Peppers beguiles in the way Tortoise and Jim O'Rourke do, big thoughtfully unfolding songs that have a calming air of five am on a still blue morning. Big in Japan west coast of Scotland archetype Ally Kerr plays too, an acoustic set with a few new tunes to sprinkle among older favourites. Just really good guitar and voice drifting from the speakers and insinuating itself in your airways and heart with apparently no effort. Sweet! Also liberating tunes there's Stuart Kidd - Banditry and bang-a-gong absence of gadgetry music played because - well, sometimes there's no reason or masterplan, it's what some people can just do really well.

PABLO ESKIMO / LE RENO AMPS / + 1
Le Reno Amps was founded by Scott Maple & Al Nero. The songs are often built around a close vocal harmony & are very lean, all the fat is cut off so you can savour their buttery goodness! Blending a wide range of influences, the bands live show has been described as everything from alt-country' to acoustic punk.' The music has a broad appeal & Le Reno Amps have had successful supports for acts as diverse as Michael Marra, The Rakes, Sons And Daughters, Brakes, King Creosote, Arab Strap & The Stranglers. "They're rooted in the blues with a punk aesthetic, but veer boldly into country balladry & sexually-explicit punk numbers" The Herald. "..a shifting of pace and style that sets them aside from obvious comparisons e.g. White Stripes or Sons and Daughters" Is This Music? "Country-Punk with a smidgeon of Power-Pop. It's like the Everly Brothers teaming up with The Pixies, whilst Tom Waits & Weezer try and get a word in" Vic Galloway, 'Air' Radio Scotland. "Le Reno Amps plough 3-part harmonies into Beatles-esque chord changes & some Billy Bragg observations, combining it all in a series of ebbing verses & bouncy choruses" Comes With A Smile Fanzine. Le Reno Amps were recently included in The Lists 'New Talent' pages of the '50 Best Scottish Bands of all Time' supplement & are hard at work recording their second album. Their Debut EP The EPY EP' (Cat No: TVP001CD) & eponymous debut LP (Cat No: TVP002CD) were self-released on their own Vanity Project' imprint & are available via simbiotic & their website.

WITHOUT MALICE / + GUESTS
"The band hail from Fife in Scotland which brought you the likes of KT Turnstall, Lone Pigeon, John Yorkstone etc. This 5 piece have been likened to a young Pink Floyd sparring Cooper Temple Clause with special guest Kate Bush. Influenced collectively by the likes of Interpol, Jeff Buckley, Genesis & Arcade Fire"

Dicelines: THE ARGUMENTS / THE INCENDIARY BATS / ROCKETFOX / GDANSK
"Rocketfox: the fastest rising star on the Scottish music scene. With only a handful of shows behind them in the city of Glasgow, ROCKETFOX have already gained a respectable & ever growing hardcore fanbase (including XFM's Jim Gellatly & Frazer Thomson & Daniel Wylie of the Cosmic Rough Riders) with their irresistible hooklines & highly engaging live performances. The powerpop trio consisting of Gary Johnstone (Gtr/Vox), Fiona Crawford (Bass/Vox) and Neil MacDougall (Drums) have quickly established themselves as the ones to watch in Scotland. With a sound not a million miles from Jimmy Eat World, Foo Fighters & The Subways, you'll soon be addicted to their gorgeously blended guy/girl harmonies & driving rhythms which make you wanna grab a friend & dance, mosh & sing all at once!" "Gdansk are a 4-piece from Glasgow. They use guitars, bass, drums, keyboards & voices to create melodic, atmospheric, off-kilter pop songs on a grand scale." / The Arguments are a 5-piece band, currently located in Glasgow & have been together for just over a year now. For the most part of that time, they have been gigging in around the area of central Scotland, playing their own unique & original brand of "Rhythm and Soul". David O' Hara is the founder & the main songwriter of The Arguments, but is happy & privileged to say that the other 4 members of the band are contributing greatly to the outfit, conjuring up a great potential to become a big name in the local underground scene, as they start to build up a very interesting & diverse catalogue of material. THE SKINFLINTS / CORIOLIS / TAYLOR KANE / + 'Frontwards' DJs
Coriolis: According to the NME (page 19, 11/2/06): 'Glasgow 4-piece Coriolis play the kind of feedback-drenched indie-pop we'll never tire of bouncing off our bedroom walls to. Theirs is a sound that recalls early Sonic Youth, fellow Scots the Vaselines & the sound of brittle hearts splintering into tiny shards of gush-stained goo. Frankly, we'd like to snog them until their lips bleed.' / Taylor Kane say this of themselves... "This incarnation of Taylor Kayne began in August 2005. The band is based in Dunfermline, in the slight anomaly that is Fife. We have gigged in all Scotlands major cities, one of the most memorable being Tigerfest '05, in association with Is This Music? at the Carnegie Hall in Dunfermline. Taylor Kaynes pop tinged overtones bridge a deeper, underlying sense of melancholy. The band draws influence from all music; most prominently from rock bands like Placebo, The Ramones, PJ Harvey, Siouxsie & the Banshees, The Breeders. This said, our songs are more influenced by our thoughts & feelings than by trying to emulate any particular style or fit into a specific box. In choosing the name Taylor Kayne we considered our aim in music. This being to splice & weave together the sounds we love, creating something powerful and beautiful with no sense of gender division. From here, we looked at the meanings of names, finding that Taylor meant to cut and Kayne beautiful and warrior, with both being unisex in nature. This seemed to fit our ethos & became our identity."

- GIG OF THE MONTH
THE GIN GOBLINS / THE DANGERFIELDS (pictured) / THE NEVERLAND SLEEPOVERS / NUMSKULL
Exciting night of hyperactive guitar thrung played at furious and unconcerned tempo by guaranteed good night bands all pogoing about on seemingly never-ending tours. The Dangerfields, should you be an unfortunate newcomer, play a tasty punk-o-metal-variant, proper-metal riffage and Anthrax shredding all tossed out in super-fast sub-two-minute pit stop manner. Most recent album 'born to rock' has Rosemary's baby holding an SG on the cover. Numskull maintain the tempo and also appreciate that a good song is a short one. I love their myspace description, 'Ramones, The Queers, Screeching Weasel, other bastards...' Satanic Nazi child abuse hatred Hitler-as-Aphex Twin tit clone guitar frenzy bad dream skull-crushed apparent Google buzzword nightmare from drinking too much Jesus Juice - it's The Neverland Sleepovers! And to further stalk your REM sleep, the Gin Goblins, who have ten years of playing fast and hard to draw on for their cackling goblin activity, which, as a trawl through their hilarious website reveals, has been a catalogue of 'what, us?' offence, flicked bogey insouciance and very fast, teeth cracking rock from the off. So we CAN do polished pop with a brain without it sounding like it was recorded in Carrie Fisher's lounge. IYKWIM.

Oopemoscreamo presents: AMANDA WOODWARD / AUSSITOT MORT / MESA VERDE (pictured) / ALLERGO (pictured)
Amanda Woodward: What can be said that has not already been said? Bridging the gap between the French emo scene of the 90's and the current crop of upstarts is this magnificent specimen of a band. Loved and revered by everyone from screamo kids to mosh kids; rarely can a band be some vitriolic and passionate and appeal to such a wide range of kids. Two brand new jams will be appearing in the form of a new seven inch to be released on level-plane this summer. / Aussitôt Mort: A scintillating demo lead to Greg @ Level-Plane offering to have the material remastered and repressed in the form of a 12" ep, not bad for a bands first few months of life. OF course they had all ready put time in various French bands and have come to share members with their tour partners, but aside from that inside baseball the demo shows that this band are a serious prospect for the future. / Mesa Verde: Over blown and chaotic hardcore tempered with moments of post rock bliss. Moonshaker: THE PEDESTRIANS (pictured) / VILLA NOVA / HALYCON
Formed in 1997 by school friends, The PEDeStrians started off rehearsing in a garage in Glasgow's Southside. Their first success came by winning a Battle of the Bands competition in Dec '97 & then moving on to play various Glasgow venues such as King Tut's. In 2003 the band received their first radio airplay on Billy Sloan's Clyde 1 show which was followed quickly by airplay on Jim Gellatly's Beat 106 show & an interview on Beat 106 on the Beatbreakers slot. The PEDeStrians have supported some notable acts most recently We Are Scientists at King Tuts, previous acts such as Haven, Chris Helme (ex Seahorses), Ricky Warwick (ex The Almighty), Transistor (Danny Wilson) & were the first unsigned band to play the Glasgow Carling Academy when they supported The Inspiral Carpets in December 2003. "BabyBones are Margaret, Greg and Lloyd. A friend, a boyfriend and a girlfriend with “one hell of a voice” Three youngsters from Glasgow who want to make you dance! Fast and sometimes guitar driven electro with nods to the likes of Le Tigre although never making time to be unoriginal show this young band to be one to look out for in the future. They recently went down a treat at End of the Month club with bozilla." / "The Kara Sea is Sarah. The Kara Sea is also a DJ, a promoter, a writer and the maker of some charming songs with the aid of her trusty laptop and a host of instruments. It can be difficult to pinpoint the music down to a few genres as her music can swing from sparse and warm to cool and eventful, always whilst engaging the listener into her world of foreign voices, electric beats and twinkling samples." / "Smile for the Cameraman Honey is John Baillie Jnr, one of the hardest working musicians in glasgow. he makes mashup, breakbeat, polynesian pop, glitch, microwave sounds under the guise of a human behind a computer and claims that he will I play a 25 minute live set over the phone for 10 regal kingsize. BAYAN / + GUESTS
Bayan originally founded in Italy, merged contrasting Garage-Rock & Bossa-Nova influences, to produce a gritty rock sound arranged in subtly intricate structures and rythyms. In late 2005 Bayan had 3 songs included in 3 different compilations distributed in Italy courtesy of Audioglobe. This led to them being signed by an Italian independent label ( www.videoradio.org) after which they recorded their first official LP. In autumn of last year, they went on national tour to promote the album. The group were compared to Deus, Radiohead, Alice in Chains & Jeff Buckley, in the write-ups following the tour. After their success in Italy, the group founder (Niccolo' Giulianelli) & bass player (Iacopo Simonelli) moved to Glasgow, attracted by the thriving music scene, to further promote their album. They have reformed Bayan, which has acquired a distinctly international flavour now comprising 2 Italians, 2 Scots & a Filipino.

ANATA / CALLOUS / + GUESTS
Anata: Formed in Varberg, Sweden in 1993 by Robert Petersson (drums), Fredrik Schälin (lead guitar, vocals), Mattias Svensson (guitar) & Martin Sjöstrand (bass), Anata's penchant for penning unrelenting death metal with a razor-sharp sense of melody has always been an inherent trait in their songwriting. As the band grew as musicians & songwriters, the music shifted into a darker, more death metal direction. Performing live with Dissection, Lake Of Tears and Beseech, Anata also proved to be an intense live outfit. It was in this arena that the band honed their skills equivalent to that of their more experienced countrymen. Anata's first demo, "Bury Forever the Garden of Lie", was recorded in June 1995. The recording was met with overwhelming success from the European press, & furthered the band's visibility in the worldwide market. Yet, even with an acclaimed demo behind them & increasing interest from press & labels, guitarist Mattias Svensson & bassist Martin Sjöstrand left the band in 1996. In the same year, Anata found a new bassist in Henrik Drake. Ready for battle once again, Anata recorded their second demo, "Vast Lands of My Infernal Dominion" in 1997. The demo signaled a continued drive to venture faster into the depths of death metal, using the blueprint drawn and re-drawn by their American counterparts as a guide. By year's end, the band found Andreas Allenmark to fill in as second guitarist. The quality of "Vast Lands of My Infernal Dominion" landed in the hands of French label Season Of Mist, & only a year later Anata was in the studio recording their debut album. Titled "The Infernal Depths of Hatred", the album featured 4 songs from their second demo as well as 4 new tracks. Tracks like "Released When You're Dead" & "Aim Not at the Kingdom High" ushered a move into thicker, bottom-heavy death metal while "Slain Upon His Altar" and "Dethrone the Hypocrites" maintained the band's yearning for harmonic structure. As evidence of the album's greatness, French magazine, Metallian, voted "Infernal Depths of Hatred", "Album Of The Month". The mounting praise from fans & critics alike didn't stop Anata. Never one to rest on their laurels, Anata started writing for a 2nd full-length. "Dreams of Death and Dismay" harnesses Anata's punishing songwriting abilities into 10 explosive songs of uncompromising, punch-you-in-the-throat aggressive death metal. Anata's fierce, all-over-the-fretboard riffing, however, never compromised the band's superb melodic sense. The seamless combination of musical elements & culmination of many years of experience shows that Dreams of Death and Dismay isn't merely a death metal album with fantastic melodic purport, it's an album that shows where the genre has been & where it's headed. Anata is the future of intense, intricate metal. "UNDER A STONE WITH NO INSCRIPTION' (CD 2004) In April '01 drummer Robert Petersson left Anata and was replaced by Conny Pettersson, & the new line up signed to Wicked World in August '02. Taking the best part of '03 to record their latest album, the band eventually emerged from Studio Mega with the phenomenal 'Under A Stone With No Inscription', released in January '04. Having developed their sound into something genuinely unique, the band suddenly found themselves bracketed with the likes of Cryptopsy, Dillinger Escape Plan and Meshuggah, so erratic and formula-free was the material on offer. Attracting praise from all quarters, the band set about embarking on their first UK tour with Decapitated, in March '04, ending with a sold out show at London's Camden Underworld. With material for the new album 'The Conductor's Departure' already completed, Anata's ascent into the elite of Death Metal looks assured. Callous: though inspired by contemporary musical masters such as Psycroptic, Anata, Nile and Hate Eternal; it is far from the Callous intention to become carbon copies of said talent. Inspiration rather than replication being the key-word, Callous is arguably one of the most original bands in the U.K. Callous are a technical Heavy Metal Band with a no compromise ethic & have always intended to step outside the circle of metal cliche. The material is designed for the mentally agile, harnessing the power of fusion, polyrhythms, exotic key-changes & time signatures. The aim is to create an experience with measured quantities of brutality, melody and technique while remaining accessible & enjoyable.

THE FUNK FEDERATION / YVONNE LYON / ANDY CRAIG
The Funk Federation started out life being called Funk in the Union, a mega 30-piece soul band & gospel choir with regular packed out nights in student unions around the country. It soon became more practical to trim the group down to the current line-up of rhythm, brass with Paula Abla Fummey on vocals. This new band became The Funk Federation - a fusion of funk, soul & acid jazz music. / Singer-songwriter Yvonne Lyon is among the best & brightest emerging talent currently from Scotland. Her songs combine poignant lyrics with strong, creative melodies, demonstrating a voice that can be both fragile and intense. Since its release, her latest album Fearless (produced by Wet Wet Wet's Graeme Duffin) has created immense interest, already having received extensive airplay on BBC Radio Scotland. Yvonne has written & recorded a set of songs to rival any Scottish album this year. Her songs create a stir every time we play one on the show. A superior piece of work. Friday 21 - GIG OF THE MONTH
G-PLAN / SIMPLESTORM
Simplestorm amalgamate from the remnants of Great Lost Scottish Bands like The Multiplies, El Boy Cartographer and Text Adventurers. I'm just pretending to be a London journalist. Simplestorm are well-practised local heroes, about whom one might rightly expect great things. From their provenance, of course, and well-chosen support slots indicate peer group respect, yes yes, but mainly for the fact that they make almost casually loose, incredible tight music, the type that grabs your lapels, tells you very intently yet passionately how much you need to sort it out, and then releases you, an expression of disorientation about your face. They play tonight with G plan, who share a joint single with Simplestorm and are splitting up. No spilt milk, no tears, but a bit of a shame, they've been Gig of the Month a few times, and musically they were progressing somewhere good, with all that the word progressive may imply. Their webspot tune and impending second album suggests an elegiac GYBE! tone, but it seems more a timely downsizing than anything to do with doomed youth melodrama... so, Farewell Show, and all that, with a forward looking note from long term Note regulars and soon to be Great Lost Scottish Band B plan... the cosmic ballet goes on.

Pigscum, Pigscum, Pigscum, la, la la! I cast about for cleverly heavy words and elaborate analogies, but in vain. It's a just a comical word sidebar to the main action, which is Pigscum ablur playing the dense crunch. Type in Pigscum on Google, go on, it's funny. No, I meant Pigscum, the extremely heavy band. The February Solution weigh in, it's full tilt zombie apocalypse chainsaw horror flicks shot up and down the central belt on a low budget complete audio track. Unhinged pleas for mercy from fuck knows what cut through the schizophrenic music, lurching from the slaughterhouse into the fields, tantalising glimpses of tranquillity, then the bad man appears at the gate again... LORIS / + GUESTS
The seeds of Loris were sown in 1986, when Bruce Ferguson turned up to play drums with guitarist & singer/songwriter Jim Byrne, then fronting a lively kind of country rock band called Dexter Slim & The Pick-Ups. This band metamorphosed after a few years into The Hemingways, reflecting a move towards a more heavy rock style. They were joined also by David Rodger on guitar & played here & there about Glasgow. Then, around the mid-90's, David left to front the Brown Family & Bruce to front and play percussion in Spong, a quite theatrical sort of avant garde rock combo. Meanwhile, these 3 continued to play in an acoustic outfit which went by the name of Banjaree, & they were joined on bass by Jim's brother Peter. Eventually Peter went down to London to study for a degree in musical instrument building & repair, & after that everyone went their separate ways for a while. It was then 2002, when Peter came back from London & was looking for a band to join, that he consulted Jim and Bruce, who were jamming together sometimes with various oddbods, & they formed Loris. David then came back to play guitar with his old mates again (David and Peter having gone to school together) but after a couple of years his commitment to a full time proper grown-up job meant he had no time for the stresses & strains of performing in a rock band and he left. Loris decided against striving to find a replacement and continue now as a 3-piece unit playing energetic and entertaining rock music, ready to show their mettle & strut their stuff any time!

MONKTUS / ASTRONAUTS FAIL / KELWAN
Monktus are a rock band based in Glasgow & Edinburgh, consisting of a Craig, an Andrew & a Steve. They've been described as sounding like "Weezer if they grew up in Scotland listening to Idlewild" although they are also influenced by the likes of Sleater-Kinney, Pearl Jam & Tool. Astronauts Fail play temperamental, inventively arranged songs which never want to stay in the same place, darting from one rhythm to another, one section to another section, but as melodically as can be. The band can be delicately quiet or explosively loud or somewhere in between. The current line-up has been in existence since late 2004 & they have recently completed the recording a& mixing of "Played Out In Torn Denim."
