Dicelines: RED AMP (pictured) / TWEEZER (pictured) / YOUR SCARECROW (pictured)
Starting in 2004 at NGC (North Glasgow College) the band Red Amp was formed. By mid 2005 the 4-piece band had now become popular in the city with a collection of catchy songs, this also saw them switching to a 3-piece for a much tighter sound. By the start of 2006 came one of the bands biggest triumphs in finishing first in the qualifying rounds and semi final's to reach the finals of Fury Murry's King of the bands in Glasgow. / Glammed up sludgecore from the marvellous Tweezer. Like a mutant hybrid of acdc, the stooges, thin lizzy and nirvana! Quite a heady brew indeed! / Your Scarecrow formed in 2001 in Glasgow out of three men from the Isle of Lewis. Glider: with influences from my bloody valentine, the telescopes, boards of canada, low, ride, the swirlies, the nightblooms, undergroundlovers, aphex twin, black dog, alfie, superfurry animals glider are sure to please almost all independent rock lover's ears... / Sleepmode subsist on a basic motor function. It is a function encoded in every person, but rarely realised or used to it's potential. Like being locked in paralysis with your eyes open, watching dreams unfold before you, yet unable to control the visions around you. Sleepmode awoke in their dream and began their function in 2003, meeting in a crypt to explore music, thoughts and ideas. Since then they have been developing their own musical world, not concerned or influenced by the trends that disappear in the blink of an eye. With an approach to songwriting that focuses upon the people, places and events that pass by; each song is it's own story. Sleepmode have built a reputation for their compelling live shows, where they give fiery, spirited performances. They have found themselves performing at T in the Park and have supported many international acts and enjoy breaking instruments, amps and shocking audiences. Also sometimes, they're quite funny. / The Aphrodisiacs: Set in present day Scotland against the backdrop of a bright, urban landscape, the ageless superhero trio combat sinister villains and aim to rescue innocent victims by bringing forth exciting new songs based on universal themes, encompassing the same time-honored tradition of the classic Aphrodisiacs legend. They are a three piece experimental, dance, electronic rock from Motherwell, Scotland. Their debut album "This is a campaign" was released on Edinburgh independent label SL Records. The bands second album "In the Name of the Father" was released by japanese label Quince records in June 2006.The band had the privilege of recording two sessions for the John Peel show on Radio1 (2002/2004), feauturing twice in the BBC's legendry festive fifty chart ( no 49. in 2002 & no45. in 2004).

STROSZEK / JYASK
Stroszek: "Vibrant, threatening and song-writing-wise as good as any of their mentors" Is This Music? magazine. Stroszek are named after the 1976 Werner Herzog film. Zek is Russian slang for "prisoner" or "inmate". Stroszek are unconventional and uncompromising to say the least. Opting to use a drum machine instead of a drummer is one example and it has given the band a more versatile and exciting edge. Some songs are tinged with electronic dance-like rhythms, some are epic, soul-destroying anthems and others are intense moments of atmospheric beauty. Unlike most bands these days, the Zek put equal emphasis on the importance of both the music and the words and they are not scared to speak the truth. The words sometimes even seem to contradict the music, which leads to exciting and interesting results. Tackling themes such as corruption, genocide, nationalism, imperialism, justice and loneliness among others, the subjects are serious but often filled with irony and sometimes delivered in a "tongue-in-cheek" style. When the band recorded their first demo in April 2005, the first song the band ever wrote, No More Exclusives (the lead track on the CD), was received with great enthusiasm and won airtime on Vic Galloway′s BBC Radio Scotland show as well as making appearances on web radio stations and club sound systems and winning "Best Song" votes. The songs on the CD were piercing and epic. / Jyask originally started as an instrumental band by David and Alistair some years ago. The music was heavily based on Electro-pop sounds with a big dose of samples and a several late nights in front of Pro Tools. Although instrumental tracks were the foundation, David and Al eventually got bored with each others company and decided to enlist the help of drummer Darren in 2006. With the new addition, the songs started taking on more of a live feel, while Mr Sequencer was still providing the backdrop (and click track). Then a singer was added, Angie's vocals have given the band a distinctive sound and taken it away from the old instrumental days. This was quite a learning curve for the band having to write tunes with vocals in mind. However, Angie's style has shaped the band into their current sound.

Go-Ra-Ga: SLEEPING STATES (London) (pictured) / HYENA / EAGLEOWL
Go-Ra-Ga, The little sister of Drive Carefully Records. Contrary to Spinal Tap, you can – in fact – go raga. Tonight's trio are all gleefully off-key, an inappropriate graveside tribute. Sleeping states trek from Our nation's Glorious Capital, toting a red spotted hanky full of quite exceptional tunes if myspace's tribute is anything to go by [thanks be to this miracle of the modern interweb age] – the tune 'Rivers single version' has just had me dabbing a single tear, all dewy melancholy for Optic Nerve comics read on trains as cracked and broken hallelujahs play over my walkman, sun slanting over the trees at Carstairs during an unplanned break in the journey. You see, it doesn't matter if that happened or not – in sleeping states, you emerge into odd and symbolically resonant landscapes at will. The music of Sleeping States has much the same effect. Taking a sharp left, hyena laugh like drains, the gurgling laugh of a clown underground with balloons and an arm between pointy teeth. The music is a tumult of flotsam, stormwater guitar surges through rusting bars and slakes parched concrete ditches. Well, they called it 'dig a bath', and I sure could. Bringing the vibe back to the downbeat nachtmusik, eagleowl bring on the cello and large guitar strummed solo. The List calls them 'post-folkers', which sounds like an insult depending on your accent, so let me instead refer to the Will Oldham I avoided mentioning earlier in this blurb and suggest a somewhat faded Gilded Palace [Brothers] of Sin, with a desolate Emmy-Lou Harris dolefully intoning… 'buy my hands' has me tear-dabbing again – a mite sensitive? No sir. Delicious. To reiterate: you CAN go-ra-ga.

Mangara: LEVOLORA / KURAI KOTORO / ANAVRIS
Kurai Kotoro came together this year but has been in the pipeline for a lot longer. Christian (lead vox, rhythm guitar) used KK as a pseudonym for many years, keeping a back catalogue of songs he felt were too personal for his band April's Last Chance. After the breakup of ALC, Christian was encouraged by friends and family to form a new band with his Kurai Kotoro material, so he asked friend and ex-Latonic guitarist Jay to help realise KK. Barry (ex-Seth and Crisis Project) joined them on drums, followed quickly by Ian (ex-Dropkick) on bass and Jordan on synth. is this music?: THE RED WELL / NORTHERN ALLIANCE / CANDYTHIEF (solo) (pictured)
Traipsing down the coast in a slow moving boat… people are spied on the shore lost in lugubrious moments of solitude, cursing life because someone close moves adrift again. A lighthouse blinks on and off along the road, reminding the sulkers that items are often not just metaphors, and the boat sails further along. A cigarette is lit, a shoulder shrugged. We've just about exhausted our resources but life goes on. More down at soul tunes from the ever exciting Fence massive with Candythief, Diana with the very delightful voice, kind of reminiscent of Popinjays, or even early Cardigans before they became monsters of rock… swirly pop that is mercifully unwinsome and neat lyrics, factor in those weird chord changes and you have a Syd Barrett untainted by mandrax and much better looking also. It's ALL about the music, man! [The gentleman doth protest too much.] Also, Northern Alliance take time off subjugating the people of Afghanistan to play some of their also shuffly, a bit low but getting on with it tunes. COPILOT EFFECT (pictured) / THE PARKERS / COLLAR UP
Review of CoPilot Effect release: "CoPilot Effect, the three tracks on show here each bring something different to the fore, but each track suggests that the band have an undeniable talent for crafting exciting, uplifting and most importantly, memorable songs. "Russian Dolls" opens the sampler, with the verses starting off quite restrained before giving way to the epic chorus section and finale which brings to mind a heavier and more concise version of Sigur Ros. The violin and drums take centre stage in "D11", which utilises a quiet/loud approach and features an impressive vocal delivery that is perfectly suited to the track. The only downside is that the song finishes so suddenly after just over 2 minutes when you're left longing for more. The final track on the sampler "Slow It Down" is the most immediate track of the three, and perhaps the most accessible track for a first-time listener. The song contains a memorable chorus and some interesting guitar work while the violin in the background complements it nicely, and ensures that the sampler ends on a high note. The three tracks on display here each have a stirring, uplifting quality to them, and suggest that CoPilot Effect are a band that you should definitely keep an eye out for after this very impressive debut. Glasgow '07: SHOEGAZERS / BEACHES OF THE PROUD
Beaches of the Proud is an electronica/IDM/Ambient/Downtempo/whateveryouwanttocallit act formed by Dave Webster, who is also the Guitarist/Synthist/Vocalist from Glasgow band The Makos. It started off as a side project from The Makos, containing songs that didn't really fit in with the direction we were going, and also as a sneaky page to secretly big us up. However it kind of snowballed, and after I got some great feedback on the music and playing the songs live, I've now turned Beaches into a regular live act, with visuals and everything. If you've seen/heard of Beaches before, I really recommend you come and see a few live shows, as I work very hard to make each show as "live" as possible, and different to the last one, which involves new songs, different versions of old songs, and new segues. It's mostly improvisation based, so sometimes even I don't totally know whats going to happen. / Shoegazers: influences they quote are: Doves, Explosions in the Sky, Massive Attack, Mogwai, My Bloody Valentine, Nirvana, Pink Floyd, Portishead, Radiohead, Stone Roses, Sigur ros, Spiritulized, The Verve, The Velvet Underground – zounz tazty!

DOWNSTAIRS in the notecave: Speakeasy presents: THE RED DEER TOUR: LIZ GREEN / GEORGE THOMAS / TOM SNOWBALL
The Red Deer tour: Manchesters finest curiosity folk night, the red deer club, visits glasgow for one night.... with Liz Green who sounds like a shy Nina Simone, with an extraordinary voice held right back so that sometimes it's not much more than a whisper, making this an intimate and affecting perfomance. It was just her and her folky acoustic guitar, with little bluegrass flourishes and sometimes funny, sometimes achingly sad lyrical turns that hit you right in the stomach.... If there was any justice in the world, every CD player in the country would have Liz Green on repeat, or even better, every living room would have its own Liz Green in the corner, giving the type of performance that she did tonight. " She gives you that same warm fuzzy feeling you get when you put on an old jacket and find £20 in the pocket. Especially if you imagine you're in mississippi and the jacket is made out of real cow and you substitute the £20 note for three magic beans..." / George Thomas: coming from Manchester's Red Deer Club imprint, this delightful collection of homespun folk is straight out of the Devendra Banhart book of loveable acoustic weirdness. The organ wheeze and plodding bass of 'Man On A Galloping Horse' is reminiscent of the faux-Depression-era blues of Tom Waits but with the sort of recording aesthetics you'd associate with Songs Of Green Pheasant. 'Cakes, Pastries and Patisseries' condenses all the wilfully childish eccentricties of the aforementioned Banhart into its all too brief duration, and even if it does come across as a bit wacky, the twinkling lo-fi piano and understated harmonica provide an emotive counterpart to it all. 'Oh Men Of The Trees' is a moody, choral excursion complete with vinyl crackle and echo-wracked recording fidelity. The album winds to a close with its standout track 'Bad Luck Blues', its plaintive melody, sparse piano and ukelele arrangement practically assuring its place on a mobile phone advert sometime in the near future. An extremely satisfying example of music at the more commercially viable end of the so-called freak-folk spectrum, Concert For Two Bicycles comes highly recommended. Lovely. Doors 8.30pm, £3

Predestination Records present: ANDRE DURACELL / TAKE A WORM FOR A WALK WEEK (pictured) / PVH
Take a worm for a walk week. There's a bit in The Young Ones where Vyvyan copes with a Sunday morning hangover/church bells ringing combi by banging his head against the wall and shouting 'shut up, you bastards!' over and over. On the back of his denim jacket it says 'very metal'. This is what the Take a Worm… track 'side effect' made me think of. You can't say fairer than that. PVH are the bit in the Young Ones where Vyvyan gets his head ripped off by a passing train. Hey, this is a piece of piss. Next month I'm going to do all the blurbs like this. Seriously though, PVH're well sick, a head bouncing down the track, and I mean that as a compliment. Rounding off the Classic British Comedy analogising, from France, one man band Andre Duracell adds 'Battery' to the charge sheet – Geddit, eh, eh? Geddit? – and brings his own batterie [check my meagre French et pisse-pauvre punning], Commodore 64 sounding messy synth and a completely straight face. Genius, and my new favourite tune on the interweb, is Ninja Spirit by Andre Duracell.
