AARON FYFE
Glasgow based singer-songwriter Aaron Fyfe is undoubtedly one of the most talented upcoming musicians in the UK at the moment. Signed last year to Innovation Music after an impromptu performance at a party (a testament to the raw talent of the Dunblane-born artist); Aaron Fyfe has gone on to impress some of the biggest names in the industry. Certainly, we can expect big things from the ‘Closer To You’ EP. Produced by Jud Mahoney (known for his work with Michael Jackson, Mariah Carey, and Justin Timberlake); mixed by Steve Price (who in 2012 won a Grammy for his engineering work on the Adele album 21 – and more recently was championed for his work with Emeli Sande); and mastered by Robin Schmidt (who worked on Jake Bugg’s recent UK number one self-titled album). Fyfe’s emotive vocal quality and honest lyrics are reminiscent of Ray Lamontagne (who Fyfe cites as one of his biggest musical influences, alongside the likes of Ben Harper and Tracy Chapman). His undeniable talent is enriched by a dynamic band of musicians that help to present his diverse collection of songs while maintaining a distinctive and resonating sound. Doors 7.30pm, £7 advance £8

ALGERNON DOLL (album launch) / WHERE WE LAY OUR HEADS / LOVERS TURN TO MONSTERS / NOW WAKES THE SEA
Ewan Grant, AKA Algernon Doll, returns with his follow up to debut album, Camomile, with new album Citalo-pop, due for release on 10th June 2013 via Common Records. While last years debut mirrored Ewan’s difficulty in dealing with the toils of extreme anxiety disorder and bipolar, Citalo-pop immediately offers up something fresh in comparison with the inclusion of fuzzy grunge-esque guitars, distorted, layered vocals and Algernon Doll’s trademark off-kilter alt-folk sound exhibited in his releases to date. Evoking the spirit of the likes of Red House Painters on Old Ramon, Mark Lanegan and Elliot Smith, Algernon Doll continues to display a maturity beyond his years by executing such a rich texture to his songwriting - something many of his contemporaries would aspire to achieve. Citalo-pop marks an immediate change in direction - a freer feeling from the more introspective debut produced last year. Up tempo, distorted guitars soar throughout, with driven incessant drumming and time changes galore, all brought together by Grant’s emotionally charged vocals. / Where We Lay Our Heads: Glasgow band Where We Lay Our Heads is the musical child of singer/guitarist Wull Swales. After an initial reshuffle of band members, the line-up has settled with Wull joined by Alice playing keys and singing, Alison on violin, Daniel playing bass and Stuart on drums. The folk tinged indie-pop sound of WWLOH combines morose lyrical themes with uplifting hooks. The bands varied influences result in a big dynamic range, plunging the songs between folky interludes and massive post-rockesque breakdowns. / Lovers Turn To Monsters: the non-de-plume of perennial miserablist Kyle Wood who, on a stolen tape machine, has forged an impressive niche in the lo-fi anti-folk scene of West Lothian. His relentless work rate has led to a sprawling and formidable back catalogue of arresting immediacy, rawness and beauty that chart an engaging narrative of his life. He approaches the subjects of love and death with a bitter wit which twists clichés and mundanities into fresh and illuminating lyrical phrases. / Now Wakes the Sea is the musical alias Alan McCormack, aged 22 and ¾. Inspired by '60s experimentalists such as Brian Wilson, Van Dyke Parks, and Joe Meek, as well as more contemporary folk-based acts like Joanna Newsom, The Microphones, and GrizzlyBear, the music of Now Wakes the Sea can be labeled loosely as lofi experimental folk. Beyond this, however, there is much more to discover. Drones and tape loops often make appearances, showing an influence from musique concrète, and there's an omnipresent vast sonic emptiness, more akin to that of sparse dub records than anything folk-based.
