MAGDALENA (pictured) / STARS KILL / ST. DELUXE
Magdalena, who I lazily wrote about in a 'heard a bit of demo, read some other reviews & cobbled it together' way in last month's gig guide, deserve more from me. Now their website's up & rocking, I am able to elaborate on my original statement - 'We have Krakatoan eruptions of noise bustling in the hedgerow & a knack for super-melodie.' - and be really praiseful. Steph's voice ranks among the best vocalists'; should there ever be a 'Top 50 Indie female singers', she should easily place in the top ten. The music goes for the doleful yet optimistic surge of Delgadoan eruptions & Aereogrammatic precision timing. It's grand, & I promise I'll never half-listen to a band this good again. / stars kill say this of themselves..."stars kill are a noise rock threepiece from glasgow. we like the french." they then go on to tell how to use condoms.....in french :-) / st deluxe - St Deluxe were formed by Jamie Cameron and Martin Kirwan. Sharing a love of indie ethics and ideals, vintage guitars and fuzz pedals, we decided to start up a band + record label. Taking inspiration from bands like sonic youth, my bloody valentine, teenage fanclub, dinosaur jr, jesus and the marychain, spacemen 3, mudhoney, etc plus labels like creation, sst, sub pop, dischord.. we enlisted the help of some friends - stuart kidd on drums, brian mcewan on bass and the nibbulator on synth bubble/occasional guitar feeback to complete the line up.. THE FEBRUARY SOLUTION (pictured) / THE PUNCHLINE IS MURDER / INSURGENT
The February Solution are a 5 piece band from Glasgow playing hardcore metal with post-rock & prog influences. What sets them apart from most other metal bands is their unique ability to fuse tense, melodic tones with brutal, uncompromising beatdowns and harsh metal riffs. Influences include...In Pieces, Between the Buried and Me, Glassjaw, Textures, Elliot, Hopesfall, The Acacia Strain, Mogwai, Cult of Luna, Aereogramme,Glass Casket, The Red Chord, Norma Jean, Sigur Ros, Godspeed you black emperor....... /// Formed in 2004 in Glasgow, The Punchline is Murder set about writing material where the emphasis was on the songs. The result, an ear-splitting, caustic combination of abrasive metal, hardcore, and jazz fusion often borders on virtuosic and is laden with shifting, jagged time changes and squealing, grating riffs which overflows with raw human emotion and unconventional sounds. Live, The Punchline is Murder hit their audiences with such force and unnerving energy that you cannot deny their tenacious stage presence which has earned them support slots alongside bands such as Cursed, Walls of Jericho, Beecher and Betzefer. Having already captured the attention of the national music press and radio with their previous recordings, their latest offering We Are Legion EP is set to cause quite a stir. Its collection of unforgiving and punishing tunes display an increased harshness, brutality and suffocating density that will ensure that The Punchline is Murder won't be cursed with anonymity for very long.

That's why at POPLIFE we've bastardised the format into a rambly-shambly, interactive entertainment event with music, bad gags and general tomfoolery and childish behaviour. You can find us on the second Thursday of every month, downstairs at legendary Glasgow music venue The 13th Note. Your hosts JC and Molly, ably assisted by their kindly uncle Brendan, will test your pop trivia as well as your dope steez as you fight for the title of Pop Gurus and the right to walk away with a crate of NON-TENNENTS beer and a cash jackpot. Bubblegum, indie, hip-hop, metal, rock - if it ain't classical it's POP. So join us in worshipping at the altar of music. POP is LIFE. Welcome to POPLIFE.

THERMAL AND A QUARTER / HIS GIRL FRIDAY
Based in Glasgow, four piece, His Girl Friday have been making their name in Glasgow's underground scene for the past two years. Releasing their debut E.P, Thwart My Little Fingered Fate just over a year ago with Biffy Clyro engineer, D.P Johnson. Taking inspiration from My Bloody Valentine, Sonic Youth and Sigur Ros with core elements of Smashing Pumpkins and My Vitriol, His Girl Friday are not typical of the traditional Glasgow indie scene but not misplaced and seem to have a crossover appeal. Their EP has been a quiet success within groups of local music fans and has helped the band gain interest in their live shows. 2004 saw them invited to play a T- Break showcase gig at Edinburgh's Liquid Rooms. This also led to their first airplay on Radio 1. Also in 2004 interest in the debut E.P lead to airplay on Radio Scotland after being discovered by Radio Scotland DJ Vic Galloway. The second half of was relatively quiet after the departure of previous drummer Barry Thomas in June 2004. However October of that year saw the arrival of new drummer, Guru. The band has had a busy year after Guru's arrival. The next few months saw His Girl Friday embark on the live circuit performing at top notch music hubs from the likes of Stereo to King Tuts and Nice 'n Sleazy's. His Girl Friday's constant quest at making good music paved way for Kat McCarron. Kat's inclusion in the band has added an extra dimension in the band's music. Again with some productive rehearsals the last few months, His Girl Friday are set to get on stage again.

THE KAYS LAVELLE (pictured) / DEAD FLY BUCHOWSKI / RORY McFARLANE
The Kays Lavelle are an Edinburgh based band with more than just local credentials and ambitions. Formed at school in Dundee by friends David Knipe and Euan McMeeken, The Kays Lavelle mix fragile, heartbreaking beauty with dark, edgy, guitar driven rock. Beginning life as an acoustic 2 piece the pair realised that they wanted to develop their sound and the addition of close friend Graeme Anderson on lead guitar allowed them to explore new sounds and develop old ones. The experience that Graeme has brought is an essential part of the band's development. With the introduction of Jacob Bee on Bass guitar and Gordon Lilley on drums, the line up now feels and sounds complete. In January 2006 The Kays Lavelle are travelling to Newcastle to begin work on their debut EP and will follow this up with further recording and mixing sessions in Edinburgh at the beginning of February. The aim of the band is to have the EP pressed, packaged and ready for release sometime in the Spring and this will hopefully be followed by a number of gigs across the country. In the meantime, keep an eye out for some gigs in February, March and April. Should you wish to know more about The Kays Lavelle, visit their website where you can check out the live demo recorded in 2005, photos from gigs, practices etc and just a bit more information in general.

ANDI NEATE / FINLAY MORTON / JOHN ALEXANDER
Since her debut at the Mean Fiddler in London nearly 17 years ago, Andi has been described as having the subtlety of Suzanne Vega & Ani Difranco's stage presence, together with her own distinctive vocal style. This year saw the release of her third solo album "Paper Animals", which while retaining her unique charm and powerful melodies, promises to show a whole new dimension to Andi's song writing. Over the last couple of years, Andi has played memorable sets at Ronnie Scotts Jazz Club (London), The Spiegel Tent (Edinburgh Fringe ) & Glastonbury Festival, supporting both Stephen Frost (whose line is it anyway) and Hazel O Connor. She has also appeared at the Ullapool guitar Festival supporting John Renbourne, Issac Guillary & Clive Carrol, supported Wolfstone at the Eden Court Theatre (Inverness), Horse MacDonald at Celtic Connections & Grammy Nominee Eliza Gilkyson. In the studio Andi has recorded with Irelands Mickey Harte & with The Bhundu Boys on a soon to be released CD. As well as her own solo career Andi has played fiddle with Edinburgh band Salsa Celtica, appearing at events including The Cork Jazz Festival, The Tiblisi Arts Festival (Georgian Republic), Edinburgh's Millennium Hogmanay Celebrations & the opening of the Royal Museum of Scotland. She also has worked on a number of different Theatre productions including The Edinburgh Lyceum's "Comedy of Errors", Stella Quine's controversial production of "The Hang-mans reel", & Donna Rutherford's internationally acclaimed piece "The Whole Truth Nothing but The Truth", which was performed, among other venues, at the Royal Court Theatre in London / John Alexander is an acoustic guitarist, singer songwriter based in Glasgow, Scotland. His finger picking guitar styles & songwriting create a unique blend of folk blues & country music. Returned from performing & recording in New Zealand in '04 John released his debut album 'Waiting for Now' in November '04. John draws on his influences from Steve Earle, Muddy Waters, Willie Nelson & Ryan Adams to bring a creative & unique performance representing both quality musicianship & soulful reflective songs. This creative & unique act represents both quality musicianship & soulful, reflective songs. His songs can take you from the timeless beauty of his native landscapes to the heart felt blues of the Deep South. "There is a real appeal in hearing a Scottish singer - songwriter using his country's geography, as the Americans have done down through the years, to focus on a song & to relate words, music and identity. THEONE ENSEMBLE OF DANIEL PADDEN / NALLE / BEN REYNOLDS / NOT I
The One Ensemble of Daniel Padden: When not making music with UK experimentalists Volcano the Bear, Daniel brings together outsider folk, revenant blues, Indian ragas and de-tuned laments as the One Ensemble. Epic atonement via the sound waves of Sun Ra, John Fahey, Meredith Monk, Luc Ferrari, Elizabeth Cotton & Bartok, with a bravado and crystalline brilliance that few other musicians could endeavour to create. / Nalle: Nalle reside in a faraway, moss-clad mystical forest somewhere between the villages of Folk, Psyche, Improv and Drone. Fused with magic, the haunting songs and sprawling melodies speak of our relationship with the sun, the mountains, and the woods. Through Nalle, we waver on the wobbly branch dividing light and dark, only to fall back at the last minute onto beatific harmonies and sunshine. / Ben Reynolds: In the eternal quest for the perfect psychedelic drone, Ben Reynolds has certainly been close many a times with a dozen plus releases on labels like Time-Lag, Foxglove and Memoirs of an Aesthete. Using old Casio keyboards, tape, voice, fx and whatever he might be pulling out of the hat on the day, Ben conjures up sound like an shaman on an acid trip gone right. / Not I: A solo guitar and voice exercise in lessness, musical starvation, negative word games and scrapped ends from Iain Campbell. £4.

THE CRANEBUILDERS / PORCH SONG ANTHOLOGY (pictured) / YOU ALREADY KNOW / THE SKY AT NIGHT
Riding high on their recent success in Germany and America, British music's the best kept secret- Cranebuilders return to the UK to remind us just exactly why the late great John Peel loved them so dearly. The band will be showcasing exciting new material, alongside tracks from their critically acclaimed debut album 'Sometimes you hear through someone else' which was released last year on Skinny Dog Records. - ...... "Cranebuilders currently reside in Liverpool and formed in 2000. An offer to release a 7 single from London based Earworm records who by chance, stumbled across an early demo, resulted in the groups first release. Unfortunately the label folded before it was released, but the proposed single found its way onto the Earworm swansong: Charabang a trip to the lights compilation. It wasnt long before they released their first EP Bitch in summer 2002 on their own Ten People Tell record label and immediately caught the attention of broadcasting legend John Peel whom invited them to London to record their first session for the BBC. The release of their following EPs Youre Song (SkinnyDog Records) and Just Idleness (Ten People Tell) led to the American only limited edition, release 8 Songs (Devil In The Woods) and a second Peel Session along with a personal invite to perform as the BBC Radio 1 representatives at the Eurosonic Festival in Holland which was later broadcast on his show. Their debut album Sometimes you hear through someone else was recorded in Spring 2004 and was produced by Rob Ferrier (Clinic, Space) and features backing vocals from Elbows Guy Garvey who signed the band to the label Skinny Dog Records after spotting the bands potential early on in their career. The release of their last single So What Could I do/Trouble Is (like Lou Reed and Chrissie Hyde banging the world to rights over a cup of tea NME) warranted their successful appearance at this years SXSW Festival in Austin, Texas. Sometimes you hear through someone else was released in the UK on March 14th 2005 to critical acclaim. The band have been performing their own special brand of bittersweet pop the length and breadth of the Isle to promote this release performing sessions for radio stations such as BBC Radio 1, BBC Radio 6, XFM, BBC Radio 2 and a variety of local stations. The band made their terrestrial TV debut in the UK on Channel 4s influential 4Music show earlier this year and the video for So What Could I do was repeatedly shown on VH1 and MTV2. Further information can be found on the following websites: / The Porch Song Anthology was started in 2004 by Rachel Devine, Gavin Laird and Raymond Prior. They began writing new material when their previous band Telstar Ponies went to pasture. Following on from later Ponies releases on Geographic and Static Obelisk this new material is influenced by the spirit of British and American folk music. Rachel's brother John joined in March 2005. They recently completed an album and are making plans for the world to hear it Spring 2006. / you already know - "Music is a great energizer. It's a language everybody knows." So said Bill Hicks. Truth is, it's the only language everybody knows. Music heals, rejuvenates and conquers all. You Already Know are based in Glasgow, Scotland. The line-up of Allan Swan (singer, guitarist and primary songwriter), Keef Thorburn (guitar, backing vocals), Stef Lach (bass) and Dunc Sweeny (drums) started gigging in April 2005 and have produced a body of work that will see them hit great heights throughout 2006. Their songs are held together by a rhythm section that approaches Fugazi in terms of precision, intricate expression and versatility. Allan and Keef take the traditional "lead + rhythm guitar" blueprint and ignore it completely, offering consistently captivating new ways of pushing what a 4 piece rock band can sound like. The bittersweet lyrics are laced delicately over hugely powerful music, a genre hopping culmination of the individual band members musical tastes. You Already Know have created their own musical space that can reference Nirvana's "All Apologies", Tool's "Stinkfist", Kyuss' "Demon Cleaner" and Gang Of Fours "What We All Want" in equal measure: a breadth of scope that is very much their own. Their limited debut 7" is due to land early 2006, with an album to follow later on in the year. A Scottish tour is being put together, with a full UK jaunt and European dates to follow.
