In March 2006, The Ocean Fracture recorded their debut 5 track Mini Album, entitled "The Sunmachine and The Ocean" with Ben Phillips (The Guillaume Seam, Jairus, November Coming Fire) at City of Dis studios in Kent. / No Kilter are a local math/punk quartet they have a self financed EP entitled "Society Embrace the Fall" available and have shared stages with the likes of Don Caballero, Fickle Public and Sometree. / 'Ross Clark is a likeable performer of a remarkably young age considering his talent, looking and sounding like Bright eyes trapped in Buddy Holly's body. Although most of the crowd have not yet arrived, he joins those that have on the floor for his final song - entertaining stuff.' - is this music? Doors 8.30pm - £4

ISOCELES / BLACKFLOWER
(pictured) / ATTIC LIGHTS (pictured) / JODY BANJO
By any standards, Attic Lights should be the subject of unseemly scrambles in large music stores. Their music spins on the Swingball axis, bold as Gerry Love, from country rock through surf harmonised Girl's First Name pop looping round the ineffable ['God'] and into full dress Spector orchestre Leader of the pack rewritten and sung by Wayne Coyne & the Vandellas... which is rather a lot of referents, but Attic Lights are packing rather a lot into their songs, which sound incredible, no other word for it. Very big songs, wearing their production effortlessly, lovingly crafted and surely soon to be scrambled over. Also showing encouraging sines of development - that was a maths joke - Isosceles, who throw a shape with some of the vocal interplay/backchat thing that calls to mind Pavement, or, say, a gayer B-52s, with the nutty non-sequitur fills, thrills and noodly keyboard sound of the much revered Fuck... 'Nifty.' Very poppy, Blackflower -vocally - have a similarly chromatic pop sound to the Bluetones, which is, in certain lights, not a bad thing at all. Certainly, with lyrics that talk about a 'rush and a push', it's easy to see where the flower went to musical college, factoring in shimmering guitars of the Squire/Marr lunch time club, like in 'Crying Shame'... I could name check like this for another few paragraphs, but you get the idea. Top 'search engine of your choice' results for Jody Banjo bring us 'a very beautiful chocolate filly with a white mane and tail' on the Red River Rocky Ranch sold horses page; this three year old may have the hooves, but has she got the moves? ROLLOR
(pictured) / LABASHEEDA (Holland) (pictured)
Oooh, I like Rollor. Without even referring to my notes from last time, I note squelchy, fuzzy, bass, loping looping lopped guitar and chop n'change directions within one song. Bantering with our sound engineers. You'll like them. Labasheeda are a multi-national trio kind of based in Amsterdam doing interesting things with violin/ bass, guitar/drum/fx drone, ecstatic vocals on occasion. It's a comfortingly shoegazy thrung, rendered in an ever-so-cool art nouveau cartoon manner akin to the cover of 'Loaded', the connoisseur's choice of VU album. I suspect you may like them quite a bit too.

Moonshaker Promotions: THE GO-HAWKS / THE PARANOID MONKEYS
The Paranoid Monkeys: these Primates were drawn together through inter-planetary alignment and some strange longing to search for truth and compassion in the face of the evil warmongers and the reality of inevitable doom. Born in the English queen's Kingdom of Fife and destined to slavery to keep the rich, rich. They discovered a new way of life and discovered a voice by which they could spread word of the coming struggle and strife, kept seething by mans greed and obvious inherent madness. But the powers that be are strong and many and take on many guises by which to confuse and ultimately control the masses such as politicians, clergymen, media tycoons and entrepreneurs. They have vast armies of deluded action men yielding devastating weaponry, should force be required (and its always required). So how can they triumph in the face of such imperial forces? Who would want to care about the disturbing yet eye opening musical tales they may tell? They can only believe in their music and sheer determination and cling to the blind hope that the people will wake up to their chosen imprisonment and revolt from their keepers and truth and compassion will emerge. / Go-hawks: "Strike It Reverse It" opens this demo from Greenock quartet The Go-Hawks, and it proves to be an extremely impressive start with an infectious mix of Arctic Monkeys-esque instrumentation combined with the ear for a pop melody of the likes of Klaxons. The result is an immensely memorable song which is likely to remain lodged firmly in your brain for days on end, and it seems to be the song with the highest potential ability to garner new fans for the band. The other two tracks on the demo take more of a straightforward indie/rock approach reminiscent in places of The Pigeon Detectives, with "Wait In Line" and "Just Like Videodrome" both proving to be memorable affairs. The former in particular is an enjoyable track with plenty of sing-along moments and some impressive melodies and guitar work, while the latter is a solid track without really excelling in any particular area. The three tracks on this demo all show signs of potential and while they are a little rough around the edges, the quality of "Strike It Reverse It" in particular should ensure that The Go-Hawks continue to build on their following in their native Scotland and beyond. THE BLIMP (second last show ever!!)

Blurb writing is so depressing sometimes. There's always some band playing their last ever gig. Or at least saying it's their last ever gig, which is even worse, because you don't know whether to cry or upbraid them for sneakiness. Either way, The Blimp deserve to be observed as they drop anchor this evening - as the 'big balloon' reference might suggest, The Blimp tug a forelock to the Grand Dirigibles of Rock Led Zep, but in the full spectrum congos, cowbells and occasional disco Hammond dirty rock moves mode. Flashing their whip, a bit Alex Harvey fronting the Spencer Davis Group...all they wanted was to give you some loving. And do the one about the buffalo.

DEAD OR AMERICAN
(pictured) / LAFARO (pictured)
Although some of the tunes follow a muscular, slow burn sit-up kind of tempo, which is impressive and all 'but...' - when Dead or American lace up their running shoes and sprint off into the likes of Shibboleth, my athletics meet crowd are up out of their seats and going beserk. The bass pummel and running spike over gravel guitar scrunch is also particularly enervating. Dead or American - or DorA, as they are also rather endearingly known - are another band it's been great to see develop into this fine figure of bandhood. In a sports vest. Also very sexy, Lafaro, from Norn Iron and playing a sprung steel slinky derby downstairs at full tilt... Look, I'm not making this sexy thing up, they're all about agitational rock as well, imagine a club where athletes in cages do stretching in time to the tunes, their shorts and singlets and sinews... That favourite guitar beast of mine, the power trio with androgynous vocals and insistent tunes, Lafaro suggest they'll be your 'new favourite sexy band' and I am in no position to disagree at this moment in time. Is this music?: MOUSE EAT MOUSE
(pictured) / DUMB INSTRUMENT (pictured) / COMMANDER KEEN
Mouse Eat Mouse: "....the most astoundingly original album I have ever heard. The band is Mouse eat Mouse and the album is Mair Licht - a spoken word outfit backed by a post-punk, modern jazz ensemble. It sounds like Robert Burns is speaking from the grave through the mouth of Irving Welsh, backed up by Lloyd Cole and the Commotions. It's melodic Trainspotting, without the dead baby crawling across the ceiling and spinning its head right round. Mouse eat Mouse is impossible to define, difficult to understand and impossible to ignore. It's safe to say that there's no other band like them."Andrew Burden - Glasswerk.co.uk. / Dumb Instrument is the brainchild of composer and lyricist Tom Murray and are impossible to pigeonhole into one particular genre although "Jakey rock" would be a decent attempt. Its "all about the lyrics" (Daily Record 16/12/05) with Dumb Instrument and these are enriched with simple yet poignant accompaniment from piano, fiddle & bass. The songs are tinged with melancholy, like life, but are by no means downbeat because they often have a comedy twist. The band formed immediately prior to the May 2006 T break showcase event at Edinburgh's Liquid room and earned great reviews being described as "a breath of fresh air" (Fiona Reid) by T break journalists. Since then the band has appeared at Glasgow's Classic Grand venue as part of BBC2's The Music Show battle of the bands. Since being a featured artist at King Tut's 'Your Sound' in December 2006 the band has appeared at the venue supporting Unkle Bob and are pleased to announce their return to the venue in May of 2007 supporting renowned folk star Rory Mcleod. The band were fortunate enough to be signed by Hackpen Records in 2006 releasing their first single 'Songs Ya Bass Vol I' with their debut album to follow in early summer. / Commander Keen are a sometimes folky, sometimes electronic, sometimes postrock-ish, sometimes ambient band based in, but not from Glasgow. tronic presents:
Herb Recordings Night feat:- RUBENS / ENGINE 7 / MOSCA
The night will be showcasing artists from the Herb Recordings label, an innovative and exploratory music label based in Glasgow who release progressive, organic & refreshing contemporary ambient, idm, post rock & downtempo music. Rubens: Rubens is the collective project of Glasgow based Mark Flanagan (previous solo work under the ~ism guise) and Ayrshire based Gordon MacDermid (aka Gump). With an emphasis on upbeat electronic melodies and a blend of electronic and acoustic drum beats, the Rubens sound is primarily about putting a smile on your face while getting your head nodding. With a shared love of all things electronic and braindance with musical influences including the likes of Boards of Canada, Autechre, RDJ, Arovane, Black Dog and Caribou/Manitoba through to Depeche Mode, Neu!, Cocteau Twins, Eno, Bowie and more. Having had a passion for electronic music since the early nineties and an active involvement with music production since early 2002, the duo have been hard at work on their debut full length album for the past 18 months or so. Aside from original material, Rubens have also turned their hand to some remix and collaboration projects with some well received results including work with fellow Scottish electronic artists Dextro (Jumblefunk/Border Community/16K Records), Mosca (Retropublik/Herb Recordings) and similarly melodic flavoured collabs with South London's New City 16 (Retropublik) and Belgian singer/songwriter Peter Vanek. Current release: Rubens – 'Carnivalesque' (album out on Herb). / Engine7 is Alan McNeill: songwriter, musician, and producer. Alan makes emotional, organic music influenced by everything that makes him feel human, good or bad. The sounds swell like nature, brutal and beautiful, treading the line between paranoia and peace. Current release: Engine 7 – 'Me, But Perfect' (album out on Herb). / Mosca: Mosca has been experimenting with sound since the mid 70's when his parents bought him his first cassette recorder. His music flucuates between ambient noise experimentation and downtempo rhytmic drones. Current release: Mosca – 'Of Need And Belonging' (EP out on Herb). Doors 8:30pm, entry £5/£4

THE! DIE! DIE! DIE! / JIM MORRISONS (Netherlands)

A quartet of Dutch bands take the ferry to remind us that Holland isn't all gabba house, laid back breweries and liberal licensing laws, and that there's a rather kick-ass noise scene going on. Ominously, Puke Brigade are first on the scene. Their name has an ambiguous quality, suggesting they may be in charge of causing or cleaning. The music has no such ambiguity, the unsettled and unsettling relentless magimix of beat and fuzz will make your stomach start to do the flippity flop, yes? Staplerfahrer [a kind of North European vehicle made from outsized binding equipment and steamroller wheels] approach and vacuum the inside of your head, slice and Dyson of the brain with surges of sucking sounds, an aural quicksand pulling you further in. Lemmy playing didgeridoo as a helicopter takes off close by, or perhaps the final echoing sound in the lugs of the singer from the Doors, or a fun house mirror endlessly refracting the portly lizard king represented in music, or that sound made by your mum that one time she took mushrooms and sat outside your bedroom chanting her mantra, the shadow of her head in the little half-lit bow between the floor and the door, you with your hands over your ears crying for mercy. All completely true experiences depicted by The Jim Morrisons. TALL SHIPS / GALCHEN / BEE HEID
(pictured)
Lush electro/jangle with clockwork tight drum seating from Galchen kicks off this night of introspection and shuffling dancing. You know Galchen - the Glasgow band's Glasgow band, I you haven't seen a Galchen show, you owe it to yourself. Beeheid is a project from Cayto chap Paul, plying us with absinthe before taking us by the hand and running down a river bank in an undetermined European city, scarves trailing behind, laughter hugs and then a sudden heart-stopping thrill of fear as he turfs you in off a low bridge. You come up coughing and confused, he's just leaning on the parapet watching a KFC box float past your head as you tread water. Life's like that. Tall Ships have thankfully moved from sea-sick purveyors of melancholy to tunes - like Hi5 - that fizz, as the ocean over a scudding prow, maybe a ship bringing a particularly uplifting type of bean back from somewhere... the sound is still widescreen - a photo of a splendid cloud formation adorns their website - but less Arctic now and more entering the tropics. Hurrah! A treat of a trio to round off the week.

Drive Carefully Records presents: SAY
(pictured) / Q WITHOUT U (pictured) / MY KAPPA ROOTS / + Drive Carefully DJs
SAY began life as a solo project by former tRANSELEMENt songwriter / frontman Jay Stansfield, after the band sadly split in 2004. 2 members joined SAY (Formerly Say Jansfield) in the quest to change the world of the Music Industry: Rob Ashworth and Maria Stansfield. Thus far releases have been digital and DIY has been at the forefront of the music production, with ALL recordings done at home in Pendle. CD-R singles and already 2 albums have been produced in this way and are available online. The releases have so far been on Glasgow's Creeping Bent label. Live performances consist of three smartly dressed lovelies playing a range of instruments from Mandolin to Flute, through to samplers and soaring sweet harmonies with electronics and beautiful bass. Their music has been described as many things from folktronica to retro-pop and is therefore un-categorisable- it is, however, extremely accessible to all and will open up new doors for music that was previously seen as too alternative for the mainstream market. A new genre has been born. A new ethos is emerging. / Q Without U: blending dark, brooding melodies, powerful yet jangly open-tuned guitar, and a rhythm section tighter than an Aberdonian at a charity auction, they sound something like a cross between the Pixies and New Order, though that doesn't really do them justice – they sound like themselves.
