HOSPITAL SHIP (pictured) / DEAD OR AMERICAN / MASQUE (***GIG OF THE MONTH***)
*Some bands* seem happy to drape themselves over the couches on CD-UK and then troll over to the flat of some hack for polenta and a natter about how the
trappings of their success concern them not. It's about "danceable guitar
tunes" and a neat, nascent fringe held in place with hair products and new
style magazines. In the less rarefied air of the world of shit jobs, unkempt rugs and small sparks of self-generated redemption, bands like Dead or American remain - thankfully, wonderfully - capable of making you want to bounce round your room, creep up on the television and throw it out the window. I swear to god it had its eye on me! People were sitting on couches and talking as if
there's *nothing wrong in the world!* Out with it: guitars should be used as often as possible to make angry music, screaming music, incandescent, searing, white riot/white heat rage against the dying of delight... Type of stuff. Dead or American do this. It's not just me, it's not just me... It's not just them either - Hospital Ship are a four-piece who come coated in Shellac for optimal dynamism and angularity. Masque are two guys, backing track racket wall of
noise. Bring it all on!

CARTWHEEL (pictured) (***GIG OF THE MONTH***)
The band rolls in from Melbourne, Australia. They have a classic, sounds like it was clipped from a fanzine history, which goes back as far as the last century. It's a sweet history, one involving, originally, a punky pop band with a flighty drummer, then a mysterious girl hopping behind the kit at a jam by the remaining two members, and then hopping off, leaving the boy & the girl with guitars scratching their heads and looking at an emblematic smelly, daggy, old Converse sneaker on the stage floor behind them. There's a happy ending, both for the punky pop band (Snotrag) that died and the girl (Sarah) standing on one leg half-shod and playing bass at a gig that David and Carol (the boy and girl) were at looking for her. They came together & ploughed forward to a new world of evolving music that still has guitars & drums, but also Farfisa organs and dodgy Casio (which will always be a winner) & occasional computobleep. Stopping only to buy laces, Cartwheel are now here to make you spin!

ADRIANA / BLACK RAFFERTY / CAROL HOWARD (***GIG OF THE MONTH***)
Adriana is a singer songwriter with Tori Amos and Ani DeFranco leanings. She's depressingly young and talented, and has recently spent time vamping with other musicians in an attempt to give the songs some sonic depth to go with the emotion. The effect is a bit like hearing the Joni Mitchell and the LA Express live extravaganza "Miles of Aisles". While the Auntie Joni link is a connection surprisingly overlooked in Adriana's own blurb, it was the first thing I thought of. For Miss Adriana herself, this development is obviously a very good thing indeed. You get to see & hear an artist making a step from apparently naïf waif folky gamine child prodigy type to fully functioning organic component of song machine front lady. It's a thing that is brilliant to witness. This is mainly because it makes you realise how strong the songs are in the first place to stand up to a bit of fleshing out and colouring in. Cathc her now before it's the Clyde Auditorium! An oestrogen heavy bill is fleshed out and coloured in by fellow country/rock/folk styled troubadors Black Rafferty (even better if she turns out to be a funk tribute to Paisley's hitmaker Gerry) and Carol Howard.

POPLIFE - Monthly Pop Quiz
The 13th Note's official monthly pop quiz is an unmissable package of pop trivia, multimedia, great music, crap music and even crapper jokes. Expect much silliness and socially unacceptable behaviour as our teams battle it out to become this month's winners and Pop Gurus, and claim
their prize of non-Tennents beer and the chance to play Rockstar Roulette for a cash jackpot. Your hosts, as ever, are JC and Molly, ably assisted by the third wheel on the wobbly Poplife tricycle, their kindly Uncle Brendan, aka MC Shitehawk. They love you all and they want to prove it. Join them and worship at the altar of POP in all of its forms. Entry will cost you just one lonely little pound. POP is life ... spring into POPLIFE."

MY LEGENDARY GIRLFRIEND (pictured) / + 2
My Legendary Girlfriend are an alternative pop band from Glasgow, Scotland, comprising McGazz (vocals/machines), Chris Elkin (guitar), Jenny Wan (keyboard), Enzo Menoni (bass) and Allen Johnston (drums/percussion).When it comes to a question of pop, MLG have all the answers. Since the band's first demo and live appearance in 1997, MLG have released three EPs and four albums, appeared on tons of compilations, been reviewed favourably in various publications, received radio airplay in the UK, Europe and the USA, and played live across Britain, including supports with The Fall and Dogs Die In Hot Cars. Choruses so catchy that they are still lodged in my brain like a parasitic earwig.

THE TREND / STML (pictured) / LAURA KENNY (***GIG OF THE MONTH***)
"With a self-conscious eye on their own burgeoning status as a potentially modish vogue, aptly named The Trend play unabashedly romantic indie-rock in the sweeping "quotidian epic" manner of, say, Richard Ashcroft and company. They also have a self-conscious ear for a planet-sized radio friendly chorus. 'Tell Me' would not sit uneasily in a scene from a tv drama in which two protagonists enjoy a tearful rain-soaked reunion following a period of estrangement signified by lingering gazes from dimly lit windows and wistful glances at telephones which don't ring when they're supposed to. Songs that echo the sentiments of 'Running from Heaven', where the "Future's fading", will always strike a chord with an audience whose everyday life is made up of unresolved dramas and frustrations. The Trend's seemingly simple songcraft voices just such sentiments, of being dejected yet optimistic of redemption. Though "no one has a smile for the boys at the bottom of the pile", theirs is a music that suggests someone at least knows they're there." I nicked all that off the band's press comments bit from the website. I wrote it anyway, so that's okay. And The Trend - well, the kids are alright if the snowballing rumble of praise from more influential people than me means anything at all...

THE RED WELL (Fence Records) / KID CARNAVERAL
Little is known of how The Red Well came into the world but it has been mentioned on occasion that the story involves a stormy November night, a shipwreck and the Moray Firth. After paddling to the Banffshire coast, clinging to a piece pf broken boat, The Red Well was taken under the wing of a local family and brought up as one of their own. The Red Well never forgot that fateful night in the cold, swollen sea and was forever grateful to the piece of wood that he used as a float and a means of getting ashore. He decided to take the sacred wood and make a guitar, that way it would always be close to him. Unfortunately his woodwork skills were abysmal and there wasn't enough wood anyway. So he bought a guitar, learned some minor chords and moved to Edinburgh...

THE SQUANDER PILOTS (***GIG OF THE MONTH***)
Things do indeed happen to the Squanders. The story so far — Glasgow-based 4-piece plug away for years, making a couple of singles which suffer the usual problems of indie release. Band garners great reviews from the usual places like The List, Making Music and the like. Album finally appears, at which point bassist has departed and with keyboardist moving away from the city, the band disintegrate. Just in time for this, their debut album, to finally appear. So if the band have split — and it's probably not a split as such, just the logistics of actually playing together that makes a conventional band existence tricky — then this album is a lasting testament. The untitled rumble that starts this album kicks into Starshine, a piano-led soliloquy which itself explodes into life without warning. That's the pattern set for the album — moments of shade, and flashes of startling, pulsating light. Much of it treads a fine line between alternative (that's Massive Attack alternative) and a credible, edgier take on Dido-area adult rock — the production dictating which turn they take. It covers, as is fitting, a version of Given, a mightily haunting single, where boy and girl fight it out for lead vocal lines over swathes of malevolent noise. Common to all is the songwriting — uniformly fine throughout, only deepening the mystery of why such a stylish and danceable act haven't got further. That's the story so far; but to summarise, Things Happen To Us should be part of your life too.

EF / G-PLAN
ef ("ef - emotions, explosions, energy.") are a 4-piece Alternative / Experimental / Indie band from Gothenburg - Sweden. In the same genre as: Explosions in the sky, Sigur Ros, The Appleseed Cast, they are currently touring Europe with dates in Denmark, Germany, Sweden, England & Scotland. In their own words: "It all started under quite human circumstances in may 2003, and soon we stood in a small basement & created quite heavy music. It didnt took long for us to find that melodies, emotions & explosions were more interesting." ef use 3 guitars, bass, drums, organs, glockenspiel, accordion & a lot of effects to create their dynamic, indie postrock soundscapes. New 7" single out on Jezebel Recordings. Upcoming album out on US label Raise the Red Flag. "EF: simply beautiful, soulful, mournful indie with a musical maturity far beyond their relative youth" With support from G-Plan who hit the stage with their new 4 piece line up and dirty 3-esque stylings.

IDOU (Fruitbat ex-Carter-USM) (pictured) / YER MAW (pictured)
For those who have yet to discover them, iDou comprise ex-Carter USM legend Fruitbat (or Les to his mum), and Abdoujaparov bandmates Richy and Danny plus an iPod shuffle. The iPod contains the backing tracks to their set (as well as a selection of amusing samples), but being a shuffle, they have no control over the running order, and as such are as surprised as the crowd by which song comes next.
And if the concept sounds fantastic, the reality is even more so - Abdou faves like 'Fishface' and the Abdou theme are mixed in with some brilliantly selected covers, including a version of Billy Idol's 'White Wedding' that will last long in the memory, and even threw in an old Carter b-side in the form of 'Always the Bridesmade Never the Bride. Quite simply genius.

FREEVIEW / HOLLOW POINT / STANDBY / TENESEE KAIT (pictured) (***GIG OF THE MONTH***)
Freeview have been playing for ages. Frequent live workouts up and down the country have sculpted their rock lats delts and abs into considerable shape. When I first saw them in <ahem!> they had a great line in riffs and beyond great, gravelly vocals from imposing front chap David McCallion but that was about it really... Squawks-a-mercy, Freeview have come on some. From their grungey origins, they've moved away from simply bashing out heavy but familiar riffs and the odd catchy chorus towards an often malevolently dirty, heavy, energetic exposition of the entire history of late twentieth century rock. From Alice in Chains, Bauhaus, buzzcocks, REM, the afore-mentioned Soundgarden, to ZZ Top. Actually, I only put them in for the sake of alphabetical completism, but now I come to think about it, the blistering, blustering guitar and cheeky-as-flip lyrics of 'Tush' aren't a million miles from what the 'view are trying to achieve. Best title: "What's my pill?" Ace! Also on are the hotly feted Tenesee Kait, who bounce a similarly ter-riffic 'unashamedly brutal' music off the walls and ceilings. There is of course no point in being ashamedly brutal when it comes to tussling with the rock beast. It will eat you alive unless you're ready to rumble. Which these guys are!
