EVIL / WALL ST AMMUNITION HERO / THEE MOTHS / THE MEAN STREETS
Evil – "liz matthews is the creative force behind evil – a sub-tropical, flesheating disease that has managed to express itself in audible form! Hailing from the bowels of the earth, this unholy trinity will confiscate your senses and long for mortality. Super human guitar maestros Li'l' Davey mitchell and dr. roddy pain add their dissonant grief to liz's seraphic beats" / WSAH - "we make songs of a vignette rock persuasion with guitar, bass and drum machine technology. We try hard" the wall street duo trip the light fandango like a human version of "station" from bill and ted. Musically coming from the same drawer as big black / rapeman / fugazi. Expect a beard. Why not even bring your own? / thee moths - "Like the old tapes of Lou Barlow, Bee Thousand-era Guided by Voices, or early Beck, Scotland's Alex Botten (who aside from tertiary friends, occasionally hanging out and pitching, is sole member of Thee Moths) sounds as if he's been recording every moment of his life and miraculously whittled the best parts into 50 minutes. On first impression, it's as though all the sounds making up the disc were tossed in the air and presented to us exactly how they fell on the ground. Not long into the album, however, it becomes apparent that editing is everything; there is a brain, hard at work, making decisions, and everything is in its correct place. Melodies radiate in the ambient noise that surrounds them and throw-away pieces are strategically placed to bring a living, breathing identity to the album. Its sum is greater than its parts, and in the end Nature makes the most sense as one large composition. Unlike Barlow and Pollard, who can't help but pour out catchy hooks during most of their waking hours, Alex Botten is about as interested in songs as he is the sounds of birds in springtime. When they do occur, Botten's songs are beautifully simplistic tunes, played with the delicacy and self-awareness of The Microphones. But songs are just part of a day in the life of Thee Moths and are represented as such in the grand scheme of Nature's lo-fi sound collage. The rest of the time is spent capturing sounds of the outdoors, making glitchy noise experiments, and fucking with sampled drum beats. Even the sound of wind distorting in a microphone is not too mundane for Botten's palette, and the integrity that he treats these otherwise negligible noises with is remarkable. Nature's inconsequential and most impressive moments are on the same playing field, and mid-way through album, the two become indistinguishable. / Thee Moths seemingly use the same process and achieve the effect of a scrapbook. As opposed to diary entry, trying to solve a problem or spilling its guts out, scrapbooking takes a more subdued reflection of life. Just as cutting and pasting can give someone the feeling of individuality after being a corporate drone for 40 hours a week, Alex Botten takes the sounds from his life and turns them into a unique, understated sonic universe. Nature doesn't have an obvious narrative so much as it portrays fragments and nostalgia from the life of its owner. In an age of digitally pristine self-production, its Cinéma vérité style pacing of reality is a refreshing throwback to a time with less sensory stimuli."

IN ERNEST (pictured) / TAUNTRA (pictured)
In Ernest - "Three strong boys, one hellish wind beaten night, two french fancies and more buggery than you could shake your fat sweaty fists at..... These are the circumstances in which inErnest came to be. Ferg or "The Orange Leopard" as he's fondly addressed by closest friends and family, plays phat bass riffs so sweet- that rain falls from the sky whenever he handles his huge hard instrument(many beleive that the unexplained downpour can only be down to the tears of our lord Jesus, in the precense of something truly beautiful). Craig "The Face" Kneale happens to play zee drums in this trio, and has more power in his puny pipes than both Dolf Lundgren and Chuck Norris combined(Duck Norgren for talkings sake). Why "The Face"? Well, all doubt would be vanquished in one look at this demi-gods complexion. The self made face mask he wears during ventures to perhaps work or practice are only to prevent hideous road accidents. Much like ships to a Siren, traffic has been known to veer off the road distracted by Craigs chiseled cheek bones and earthy glow. Brendan "Jam Jar" Jones is the final ingredient in our musically splendiforous concoction. He happens to play guitar and does a bit of singing, but where his true talent lies is in four words...."blood, sugar, sex, magic". Commonly beleived to be a Red Hot Chilli Peppers album- the four words infact represent a sexual act so rare that only one man alive holds the key to the truth. Thats right, el Brendo. The said act involves blood, sugar, sex and magic...perhaps not even in that order?! its mindblowing as just a forethought. If you live anywhere near the fair city of Glasgow, why not go along to a gig? Both entry and alcohol are always free*, and the boys are extemely approachable if you would like an autograph or perhaps a signed photo for a sick relative. Go on! You silly sausage!!!" *not actually true / Tauntra - "The band formed around 1999, when 4 eggs hatched in a nest high above the annan town on Mt. Music. What followed is the result of this."

SPLINTER
Splinter originally began around 2000 - 2001 with dek and rik (the band's first guitarist). they were both from fife and had been friends for years through the punk scene around fife and dundee. they had also played in a few bands together across the years, as well as individual stints with other bands (notably dek's time with oi polloi and rik's time with maximum penetration). as neither had been in a band for a couple of years, they started jamming together (with the idea of getting another band going). they spent the next couple of years trying out various singers and bass players, but the band wasn't fully established 'til around april 2004. it was around this time that ben and euan joined the band and dek came up with the name splinter. ben had moved to glasgow from sydney (where he had sung in a couple of punk bands) and had posted an ad in local record store carnaby records looking to join a band. dek and rik contacted ben and soon they were jamming together, meanwhile continuing to search for a bass player by posting ads in music shops. it wasn't long before euan contacted dek in reply to the ad. euan had played in a hard rock band for a few years with some high school mates and so, being into heavy music like punk and metal, he was right into the style of music splinter were playing. the band was finally formed and it didn't take long before splinter started playing shows. splinter's first show was on the 1st of may 2004 (at the strawberry fields club in glasgow) with classic '77 punk band the zips (who had re-formed a few years earlier). a few more shows were played over the next few months, but it didn't last long. rik (being the only person in the band not based in glasgow) got a bit fed up travelling from fife for every gig / rehearsal, so he decided to leave and join a band with a few of his mates around the fife / dundee area. dek had also been trying to get the band going for a few years by now, so everybody thought it best to split the band up (at least for a while). after a year or so, the desire to get the band going again arose. dek, ben and euan got back together with jamie on guitar. dek had been jamming with jamie a bit over the previous few months, so jamie agreed to play guitar with splinter for a while (until a permanent guitarist was found). after a couple of months rehearsing, splinter played their first show back (on the 9th of july 2005 at the soundhaus in glasgow). after recording the got a feeling ep with the band, jamie decided to go and study in sweden for a while. he played his last splinter show on the 18th of september 2005 with oi polloi. as there was plenty of notice that jamie was leaving, a new guitarist was already lined up. sancho started jamming with splinter around late september 2005 (after playing in pencilhead for a few years). as pencilhead had become quite casual (only doing the odd rehearsal / show), sancho had no other permanent projects going and decided to join splinter. it wasn't too long before the band started booking shows again (in november 2005). this remains the current splinter line-up to date, check out the gigs page for future splinter shows.

Dicelines: THE IDEAL PANIC / DEAD CITY RADIO / ASTRO ANONYMOUS / THE DEAD BEAT CLUB (pictured)
theidealpanic - "Since its inception in early 2006, the band has been honing its sound and building its audience with key shows in Glasgow, including a support with The Hazey Janes at their ABC2 date and a headline slot at The Trongate Theatre. With a sound described as The Smiths and The Poilce out for a pint whilst getting into a brawl with Razorlight and The Doves the future is definitely bright for these 5 young lads. The result is a potent combination of catchy melodies jangly guitars and a powerful rhythm section, making this slice of Powerpop / Indie Rock burst with vibrant energy." / dead city radio - "Power Pop/Folk/Electronic/Psychedelic stylings merge from the eclectic tastes of this five-piece Glasgow band. Boasting five vocalists—or, more accurately, drunken yodellers—D.C.R. build atmospheric soundscapes around tightly crafted songs. Keyboard, korg, guitar, bass, drums, percussion and the occasional xylophone blend into a melodic, modern take on traditional rock and roll. They are two years old, and like most wilful toddlers, are likely to do the strangest things. Recently dubbed 'wedding music' by a particularly talentless young man, D.C.R. embrace the notion that music should make you sing along, dance like Robbie Williams, and try to get off with your pal's auntie." / Astro Anonymous are a five piece band from Glasgow, yet also have members originating from Sweden and Italy. They have been together since Autumn of 2005. With a few acoustic gigs under their belt, Astro Anonymous are earning themselves a respectable fanbase and a certain amount of credibility in Glasgow's underground folk scene. Astro Anonymous' sound is hard to pinpoint as simply folk, however, as the band regularly delve into the experimental side of music, as well as indie influences. At times, there is an upbeat, bright sound to their music. At others, a darker world is explored, where fusions of celtic rhythms, blues scales and eastern european melodies are integrated as one.Seeing Astro Anonymous live is also a visually uplifting experience as well as their songs. Their set lists have songs which include every day instruments such as guitars and bass, but also see the introduction of melodicas, clarinets and the odd slide guitar used. With Astro Anonymous receiving great feedback from the general public, venue owners and even record labels, it could be a matter of time before they break through and are recognised by a wider folk community. On a last note, this is just dirrrty folk which makes walls melt!" / the dead beat club - "The Edinburgh Evening News recently described us as both hotly tipped and gloriously untrendy (we prefer the latter) And with a big, warm, honest sound, the DBC makes unashamedly emotional music that gets the audience dancing, hugging, singing and drinking. Formed in 2005, the DBC played a number of high profile gigs in the last year including Elbows aftershow party at GIG and Snow Patrols New Year party featuring Belle & Sebastian. We've been lucky enough to play with some great UK and international acts such as The Beautiful South, Horse, The Hazey Janes, Chris TT, Kevin Montgomery and The Cosmic Rough Riders."Doors 9pm - £4

THOUSAND SOUNDS (in support of the OXJAM initiative)
"ThousandSounds are a band that have been through a lot together, spawned by three friends in 2000 at a party in their home village all they needed was a bassist. When Dan Doherty joined he cemented the bands sound with his free-flowing solid bass work. Over the next two years the band put together a collection of songs that drew from various influences, but had a sound that could only be defined as their own. The band played only a handful of gigs in and around Glasgow to great acclaim around winter 2002/2003, people raved about the intensity & tightness of the bands live performances. The band then imploded on itself and disappeared completely from the public eye... Nearly four years later, the boys have reunited to write brand new material. Which is something that nobody thought would happen again, especially the band themselves. Along with serious plans to tour the guys are working hard on their debut album, to be released next year." - "Bootsy Collins landing on your head in a UFO"

miso events: WIXEL (pictured) / + GUESTS
Wixel is the indietronica outfit of young Belgian Wim Maesschalck. His music can be described as a warm & organic mix of acoustic instruments and gentle electronic treatments with a lot of care for detail and subtle nuances. Comparisons have been made with bands ranging from Hood to Fennesz, from Manyfingers to Sigur Ros. Wixel has played countless shows in various formations, from introvert laptop sets to 'unplugged' acoustic gigs with a full band. In Belgium he has shared the stage with bands like Xiu Xiu, Greg Davis, Explosions In The Sky, Jel, Alias, Radian, Désormais, Amusement Parks on Fire – in dusty basements, fancy discotheques & clubs, big art centres… He's played a few shows in neighbouring countries too, including Utrecht, Luxembourg & the Spitz in London. Now he's looking to play his music across Europe with a 3-piece live band. After (sold-out) releases on small European cd-r labels like Soundzfromnowhere and Mechanized Mind, summer 2006 saw the release of Wixel's debut Heart , The album has already generated quite some attention from the Belgian press and resulted in several shows and appearances on compilations, including a track on the Domino sampler that came free with a recent issue of The Wire

Jaggy Promotions: THE NX / NINTH CIRCLE / THE PUNCHLINE IS MURDER (pictured) / PARADOX (pictured)
ParadoX "are the pinnacle of evolving Metal in the suburbs of Hamilton. Formed in late 2003, Ali and Louise had thrived to create to a style that pleased the crowds who craved individuality, and independance. Paradox have combined many influences from Faith No More and Pearl Jam, to Decapitated and Kataklysm. The undeniable individuality of guitar riffs and drum patterns simply compliment the black metal-esqe vocals which tear through the bands metal reputation and show people the true inspirations behind their music. In the effort to keep heavy music alive and well, ParadoX see no other sense than creativity, individuality, and complexity. Surely, the new breed of metal that breaks through the trend." TPIM - "Regularly described a sounding like "a car crash on the M25... but in a good way!" or "like making a hardcore pate out of your senses!" The Punchline Is Murder... are essentially best viewed live. Mixing sweeping metal melodies with punishing beatdowns, epic crescendos and crushing riffage there is a certain 'take no prisoners' attitude. These boys are only here for the carnage. Having supported the likes of Walls of Jericho, Betzefer, Beecher and Cursed - TPIM...'s live show is a wall of brutal violence which will either leave you in hospital (where the band end up on regular occasions) or hanging onto the bar, drooling into your pint and planning a relaxing holiday in Iceland to recover from the experience. Formed in 2004, the band has always been a mix of hardcore and metal fans who - when not arguing over what to out on the stereo in the tour bus - find time to blend the genres in a way previously unthought of by the side-swiped emo masses. You won't find any singing; acoustic guitar or concessions here - just a jackhammer violently pummelling your brain from start to finsh. And woe betide anyone left standing." Doors 8pm - £4

ROSE KEMP (pictured) (in support of the OXJAM initiative)
Rose Kemp (One Little Indian Records): "I don't have any boundaries and I write for nobody but myself – it's very liberating!" It's just this kind of uncompromising statement that has made Rose Kemp, just 21 yet blessed with an ear for inventive melody and an impossibly rich and reaching voice, the toast of the UK DIY and underground scene, and brought countless bookings for her brave and edgy live shows: 82 in 2005; 53 and counting in 2006. Solo, she accompanies herself with shimmering electric guitars, or loops her voice into complex, sumptuous, harmonised hooks, or simply sings unadorned, unamplified and a'cappella. With her band behind her, brilliant songs become irresistible, monstrous tunes, and she can rock any room, sway any crowd. Always getting a rapturous response, Rose, with her range of styles and material, has stood her ground on stage alongside the likes of The Subways, Gravenhurst, King Creosote, Holly Golightly, Seth Lakeman, and Duke Special, and played a slew of festivals home and abroad. The release of her single Violence, a blistering, hypnotic song that, as Rose explains, "captures that reeling silence when somebody hangs up the phone just as you're laying bare your vulnerabilities", on One Little Indian Records this autumn should confirm her cult status: January's release of her A Hand Full of Hurricanes LP will see her playing her way out of the fanzines and onto the front covers. Airplay includes BBC Radio 1, BBC Radio 2, Resonance, regional, online and overseas… What the press have said: "Enter the beautifully odd world of Rose Kemp. An impressive array of guitar pedals provides an impressive arsenal of effects through which to showcase her unique, folk-inflected voice. The highlight emerges when Rose utilises tape delay to loop and intertwine her various vocal hooks into one glorious whole. Stunning stuff." - James Hannam, The Fly / "Rose Kemp begins proceedings, with what can only be described as a beautiful performance... those who've made the effort can feel very smug that they've got to see someone very special. If you haven't heard of her, take PJ Harvey and give her even more gutsy depth, with a little more soul and you're kind of getting there." - Polly Weeks, Gigwise" / "Dark and sinister yet alluring and beautiful at the same time, how this music manages to combine such pretty and hideous sides is a mystery to me." - Dan Newman, Joyzine / "Rose Kemp is the business. Here comes 'The exciting Glasgow powerpop band' that throw out Thin Lizzy & McFly among their referents... & yet... hey, boy/girl vocals, crunching guitar & big choruses do it for me once more - what can I say? As much as music styles come & go, this granddaddio diggeth the indie rock aesthetic as much now as ever, & Rocketfox be both rock & foxy enough to keep the ancient mariner listening. Tunes like 'Truth or dare' are just so right in so many ways. AndabitlikeScarce [there I said it]... Another power trio, but slightly weirder, Rollor slap out of the speakers with Stranglers bass, chunkerter-chunk guitar prongs, deranged harmonica a la Beefheart & dense titles like 'Walking Parade Of Curiosity'. Great. One minute you're rolling along in a dusty desertscape, next it's interstellar overdrive, then rickety-tick drumstick breaks deposit you in an alley scratching your head... then that wobbly bass links arms with you & whips you off to a bar to start over. ROCK and ROLL!" ...Love Peace Music.- "Who knew that Febreze would make a good metaphor (actually, it probably doesnt), but the welcome arrival of The Vivians guarantees the freshening up of many a stage on the Scottish circuit. This 5-piece are as facetious as they come, and photogenic to boot (think Vivienne Westwood meets Salvador Dali). Shamelessly donning rock n roll parody with pride, they've got the hair, now they want the groupies (can we get all the sluts to the front please?)! You know mischiefs afoot when their own personal Master of Ceremonies, with toe-curling smuttiness, exhorts the audience to prepare for the eargasm of your lives. And so it begins. The music is tight - invoking the spirit of punk but distilling it through the ennui of these cynical times. Frontman, the deliciously unhinged Damon Deville, cavorts with the delivery and appearance of what might happen if Robert Smith banged up Karen O. And so, The Vivians administer cliché with a well-timed enema. Dandy? Most definitely. Probably Beano too." ...STV

Drive Carefully Records presents: GRNR / SCUNNER (pictured) / COURT LAJOIE (pictured) / MOLLY'S SEAFOODS / + Drive Carefully djs
GRNR: Self-styled purveyor of "berardcore", grnr is electronica as it should be. Catchy, experimental and downright fun. Gav has requested his music be described as twinkles, burbles, skronks, beeps and wobbles to make your hearts glow, and he's not far off. While his lovely melodies do, indeed, make your heart glow, there's a certain disconcerting feel to it, simmering away just ready to boil over and enter your subconscious. His music is the partner who beckons you in for a cuddle and then screams at you from close range for better effect. There nowhere near enough grnr shows these days so, suffice to say, when there is one, you should go. / Scunner love to stomp down a powder painted road, espying Bowie, Bolan, the Maels, Gary Glitter and a multi-coloured platter of like-minded others along the way. Despite drawing from sounds originating a fair while back, the full on nature of their album, String Theory ensure it could easily fit in amongst its modern equivalents, if not surpass them. A mixture of upbeat numbers and uncompromising, vicious vocals mean Scunner have acquired a cultured pretension that will undoubtedly force itself upon anyone. They are armed with a platform shoe in one hand and copy of Earnest in the other, and once they've trampled the listener into submission, they definitely has enough appeal to firmly bury themselves deep within. £4

ADAM BEATTIE / SKELETON BOB (pictured) / EVAN CRICHTON / THE STATE BROACASTERS (pictured)
Skeleton Bob: Songs about Glasgow that sound like they're about America; songs about girls who did us wrong/proud; songs about The Doublet, and yes, songs about wanting to be Merle Haggard. The songs will no doubt become significantly better when Jode does in fact become Merle... In a cavernous Glasgow cathedral many years ago a drunken-hearted boy lay lamenting the badness of girls and goodness of whiskey along with the only men who understood him Merle Haggard, Buck Owens, Hank Williams. Thus Skeleton Bob was born. Currently enjoying life as an oltime melody-driven three-piece, Skeleton Bob can often be found peddling their wares around Glasgows best live music venues. The trio comprising drummer Eilidh Rodgers, bassist Phil Brady and singer/guitarist Jody Henderson, hope to soothe your trodden heart with a filthy-sweet sound thats been likened to Uncle Tupelo, The Handsome Family, Evan Dando, and The Jesus and Mary Chain. "You can actually picture the four of them chewing their baccy and swinging in their wicker rocking chairs, softly purring their throaty musings with banjo and pedal steel round the ole saloon." - The Skinny "Wistful country-tinged banjo-coustica with mouth organ and flat caps, singing of local heroes and regulars at The Doublet [the West End's best bar]. When they sing about being on a westbound train through dusty towns, and you realise it's probably Partick, Anniesland, Dalmuir... there's a splendid shiver down the spine. This is not provincialism, it's beautiful realism. Neatly worded, and full of nice musical surprises, like the aforementioned banjo kicking in, this is an organic treat, as completely satisfying as a Greggs pasty with proper ingredients. / "....the state broadcasters are at hand to restore some colour to your cheeks. The group's warm and hazy trombone aided folk pop is nicely realised. Such balmy sweetness." - Beard (Spring 2005)

THE BILLY NAYER SHOW (u.s.a.) cancelled due to illness, will be rescheduled
Billy Nayer Show kick all kinds of ass. I saw them on their last UK tour & was an instant, if tardy, convert to the music & the dry humour that underpins it. Check my laptop, there's an 'American Astronaut' sticker on the lid denoting my appreciation of their award-winning sci-fi musical indie film classic. They are exactly the right kind of underground art extravaganza that you need in your life. Anything I try & add to this puts me at risk of saying something fuckwitted about them, so just go & see them, go & see them, go & see them. Go. See.

CARLA BOZULICH (usa) / HRSTA / TALL SHIPS
all the way from montreal, canada, we have something very special for you indeed… involving one of the most interesting supergroups to date… featuring founding members of godspeed you! black emperor, silver mt. zion, Jackie-o motherfucker, set fire to flames… hmm… it could just about work… read on… hrsta (pronounced her-shta), is the brainchild of mike moya who, along with a revolving cast of musicians, has performed under the name since 2000. hrsta’s critically lauded debut, l'eclat du ciel etait insoutenable, was released on fancy records in 2001. the band’s latest release, stem stem in electro, features eric craven, harris newman, genevieve heistek, beckie foon, and sophie trudeau. brooke crouser, in addition to craven and newman, join moya live. hrsta harnesses traditional and otherworldly sound as moya sings lyrics cribbed from lost faerie tales in a voice that recalls a more blissed-out daniel johnson or a less blissed-out wayne coyne. moya was a founding member of godspeed you! black emperor, contributing to their first two albums. he is also a member of set fire to flames, molasses, and the ever-elusive lonesome hanks. most recently moya, craven and newman have been performing in elizabeth anka vajagic’s band. eric craven is half of the duo hangedup, and has worked extensively with numerous other artists of note, including a silver mt. zion, tony conrad, sackville, sixtoo, and mitch akiyama. harris newman works primarily as a mastering engineer in montreal. he has released two solo albums of fingerpicked guitar under his own name, and has appeared on recordings by esmerine, sackville, hangedup, and many others. brooke crouser is a member of jackie-o motherfucker and set fire to flames. she has toured and recorded extensively with various groups, most notably the swords project. genevieve heistek (hangedup), beckie foon (a silver mt. zion, esmerine), and sophie trudeau (a silver mt. zion, gybe) collectively play as the mile end ladies string auxiliary, and make up the string section of set fire to flames. / carla bozulich is best known as the singer from la-based band gerladine fibbers and as the woman who re-made willie nelson’s “red headed stranger” - with willie nelson as a special guest. carla has on of the most unique voices in any genre. her work is at once brutally raw and weirdly visionary. born in new york city, she grew up a tomboy and girl protector in san pedro, ca. carla’s first appearance on record is gary kail’s album from 1982 called zurich 1916, on which she does dada-inspired worldplay, “you know, telephone and vacuum cleaner stuff”. she sang in a couple of groups- the neon veins, and invisible chains, the latter of which recorded an album for the minutemen’s new alliance when carla was 18 years old. carla disappeared from daylight for a few years, re-emerged, and was soon causing traffic jams as the gamine howler in the confrontational sex/sound assault outfit ethyl meatplow. in 1993, before ethyl’s last gasp, carla founded the geraldine fibbers, going on to record and tour incessantly with that band until 1998. scarnella followed, a duo formed with nels cline, and a decidedly uncommercial, open, experimental project. in 2001 she scored a los angeles production of jean genet’s the maids and the award-winning feature film by hook or by crook, which she scored and for which she compiled the soundtrack, went to sundance in 2003. that same year saw the release of carla’s new rendition of willie nelson’s “red headed stranger”. she has also explored mixed media and performance art, including a commission for the getty museum in los angeles.

IDIOT SAVANT / HIS GIRL FRIDAY (pictured) / GDANSK (pictured)
You'd think from reading their blurb that maybe His Girl Friday are a bit too respectful of the landscape they're part of - 'the Glasgow scene'... but they needn't be. Making music apparently designed to soundtrack aerial shots of polar bears swimming in ironic Busby Berkley circles around melting icecap fragments seems like a great place to kick off from. There's an epicicity about the songs [you know, like epic & electric?] that elevates you to that sort of altitude. Rapidly expanding like a hot air balloon in terms of line-up & sound, HGF are going for the soar. Flap those ears!

CHURCH OF MISERY (tokyo, japan) (pictured) / SOURVEIN (usa) (pictured) / BLACK SUN (pictured)
"Southern baked, hate-doom meets Japans answer to Black Sabbath.." - Church Of Misery were formed by Tatsu Mikami (ba) in the spring of 1995 to play very individual DOOM rock influenced by early Black Sabbath and 70s heavy rock, with lyrics dedicated to famous serial killers like Manson, Dahmer, Ramirez, etc. The first album was recorded immediately after formation, to be released independently by the band, but was then released as a bootleg by a US label. This earned the band a lot of recognition in the international underground for their carefully crafted and memorable songs, and their authentic 70s sound. After the bootleg cd release, their original singer was replaced byNobukazu Chow. This line-up released a lot of material on various labels like the now legendary psychedelic/doom label "Bad Acid" (Electric Wizard, Farflung etc), and Frank Kozik's Man's Ruin. Despite the fact that they didn't play outside Japan until Fall 2005, the band was held in extremely high regard around the world. After the replacement of singer Nobukazu with Yoshiahi Negishi, they signed with Southern Lord (known for their releases of Goatsnake, Sunno))), Saint Vitus, Place of Skulls, Dave Grohl's Probot, etc), and released their first full-length album "Master Of Brutality" in march of 2001. The album received enthusiastic reviews world-wide, especially in Terrorizer magazine (UK) where it reached No.17 in their albums of the year chart of 2001. It was also included in their "Top 10 Stoner/Sludge albums of all time" in issue 144, May 2006. Local gigs followed from 2001 to 2003, the band often not playing actual songs, but just jamming in freaky doomy Sabbath rock style. By the spring of 2004, COM had signed with Japanease label Diwphalanx. The second full- length album, "The Second Coming", was released in July 2004, and featured 2 new members, Hideki Fukazawa, and Takenori Hoshi. In fall 2005, COM executed their first European tour in support of the European version of "The Second Coming" from Salvation Records. The tour started in Berlin Germany, continued through France, and ended in London, England. The show in London recieved a great review from Terrorizer magazine, and they recieved a lot of attention from magazines in France & England. Some recordings of the shows will be included in a future release. Church Of Misery have a distinctive doom rock sound which is enhanced by the influence of early 70s music, like Black Sabbath, Leaf Hound, and November. They describe their sound as "Sabbath Rock". Now, the band's line-up consists of 3 Japanese guys, Hideki Fukazawa - vocals, Tatsu Mikami - bass, and Junji Narita - drums, and one Australian,Tom Sutton - guitars. / Black Sun review in Rock-A-Rolla magazine May June 2006 SACRED ETERNAL ECLIPSE Distortion Project Records This Plotkin-mastered recording by Glaswegian doomsters Black Sun manages to capture some of the essence of their formidable and incendiary live shows. Black Sun have always been an uncompromising and deliberately contrary band - early gigs would see them play with a confrontational (and occasionally violent) performance artist called Poledancer and anything up to 5 guitarists. This latest offering does nothing to reconcile that stance, with harmony and melody being neglected in favour of crushing and often sickening noise. This is coloured, thankfully, with passages of almost ambient instrumental scarcity. It is difficult to find a niche to neatly tidy this away into. While undoubtedly a doom band they, like Unearthly Trance, bring something new and unwholesome to the genre, giving it an attitude and vitality too often missing. Stand out track Seven Rooms nods in the direction of the post-hardcore prog leanings of Cult of Luna, but it's the briefest of nods and only then in acknowledgement of fellow seekers. If Black Sun can maintain their momentum and gather the new fans this CD demands then their future is looking very grim indeed. Chris McGuire. Doors 8.30pm - £6

NEPTUNE (u.s.a.) (pictured) / ACRONYM
Neptune's origins trace to 1994 as a student art project by sculptor/musician Jason Sanford, who, in order to create a new music medium while simultaneously destroying the posture of five young men, forged heavy, menacing-looking guitars and drums out of circular saw blades, gas tanks, oil drums, bike parts, VCR casings and miscellaneous scrap metal found in the trash. Neptune was assembled to showcase these contraptions in the winter of the same year and has evolved into a full time band that has traversed the US and Europe several times. The early guitars were haphazard and untunable, resulting in the atonal garage clamor of the early recordings. With several different members and collaborators over the years, the music has evolved with the instruments blending the traditional sounds of Rock & Roll with what sounds like mistake day at the ball bearing factory. The current three-piece lineup relies as heavily on home-made electronics as it does its signature scrap metal instruments. With less guys and more gear, Neptune rocks like The Fall, clangs like Neubauten and drones like Faust with improvised and not-so-improvised songs that you can almost dance to. Jason Sanford - baritone guitar, oscillator organ, electric thumb piano, foot synth, tupperphone, small electric spring, vocals. / Mark Pearson - baritone guitar, 4 string slide, bass, oscillators, homemade synths, large electric spring, percussion, vocals. / Daniel Boucher - drums, electric floor tom, drum trigger, telegraph noise box, bass dulcimer, electric gas pipe, vocals.
