GAY AGAINST YOU
(pictured) / DAS WANDERLUST / ST DELUXE (pictured)
Disco baby sexy baby hot, Gay Against You - last seen by me in matching tennis whites battering laptops and synthitars, last seen by colleagues handing out cardboard and felt pens for audience participation, with all media being pulped immediately to ensure every gig by GAY remains a unique and wonderful experience. Comprising already legendary Germlin and Yoko Oh-no! GAY pretend to be teenagers from the east coast and make hand-tooled tapes to maintain the faÁade. They make my head spin with ultra-hi-NRG catchy singalong bites. Let us never forget, GAY rhymes with PLAY. Employing the same collectivist freneticore ethic, Das Wanderlust rock up at 100mph from Middlesborough, where a fistfight between pastoral beauty and industrial waste led to distressing Early Learning Centre 'Melt Banana Duplo Figurine' video interviews with the Social Services and later this band of young women and men cuffing synths and stuff and wearing X-Ray Spex to see through yr kecks. They say 'you don't love me', but this is not true. Tonight's magimix of beautifully realised alterno-pop also contains St Deluxe, more laid-back but still compulsive guitarier takes, full of Stupid Ideas, also the title of a song that's the best combo of Dinosaur Jr squnge and Stereolab tweedle-eedle that I've heard in an age.

Jaggy Promotions: CO-EXIST
(pictured) / THE BLACK LODGE / REMAINS OF THE DEAD / WARWOUND
Co-Exist: "Scotlands finest grind-caked pitbull metal band have finally done it and put out the full length debut their demos warned would someday devastate us. With ex-Medulla Nocte howler Paul Catten adding his distintive yelp to vocalising drummer Quzzy's raspy bark, Co-Exist roll their rabid death machine forward with before only-hinted-at force and confidence on this 40-odd minute monster of an underground metal album. Abrasive as paint stripper, the once three-piece powerhouse tag team effortlessly between gut-churning, neck-invigorating riff chugs and face battering blastbeats and snare assaults creating a concoction which reminds of Today is the Day, Brutal Truth and even a finer Fear Factory, yet restrains its own distinctive flavour. Never a band to mess around, Co-Exist slam their way through eighteen dynamically written cuts without once overstaying their welcome. As the hidden cover of Sabbaths 'A National Acrobat' finally brings things to a close in invigorating, inspiring style, the feeling of freedom is positively palpable. Unconstrained by trends and generic tendancies, these 'Glasgae Coonts' put grind, hard, metal and core together just how it suits them - which suits just fine when the result comes out as fresh, frisky and ferocious as 'Surgical...' . Surely not an album destined to be a long sought-after enigma, this is just the belated beginning."

THE GLASS ANIMALS / THE IRONY / THE DIRGE

The Glass Animals: "They are Paul, Sam, Roy and John. Their combined age is 104. Paul sings and plays some guitar. Sam plays guitar a lot better and also sings sometimes. Roy attacks his bass guitar and occasionally remembers to sing. John holds it all together with an awesome display of drum hitting. We got together in Glasgow, December 2003, with Paul's acoustic demos as a starting point. Brothers John, Paul and Sam started things off, and Roy bought a bass and joined the fun soon after that. Releases include a self-produced 3 song cd, 'Glass Animals'. It's pretty low-budget, but we love it, and thankfully other people do too. You can buy it at our gigs. Our influences include Radiohead, REM, Ben & Jason, Poor Old Ben, Muse, Superhero, Alan Partridge, Jo Mango, Switchfoot, Derek Zoolander, U2, and our wives, to name a few.

Page 6: Since forming in 2003, Page 6 have played gigs all around the country to earn their badges, attracting a wide range of loyal fans on a national level & constantly progressing both professionally & artistically. They reached the Scottish Final of the Sony World Wide Battle of the Bands competition, beating hundreds of other acts to be in the final 12 and were rewarded with a show at the Carling Academy in Glasgow to a full house. Over the past 6 months, the band have taken some time to write new songs, define their image & ultimately present a fresh new package to take the industry by storm. Page 6 can be summed up by their live performance. Anyone who sees them goes away humming the tunes! The band have recently played the Radio 1's Big Weekend Fringe Showcase & have now secured a distribution deal with FOPP records. / The Contradictions say this - "Art has the power to define a whole generation. The Contradictions: a no-wave explosion of the most beautiful & disturbing noises ever heard, drenched in layers of distortion & powered by an incessant yet complicated tribal beat. All this with the poetry of the 21st century (Lonliness, Isolation, Anger, Despair) condensed into mere sky scraper sized choruses. Firmly entrenched within the boundries of originality, The Contradictions confidently smirk at our rivals, a veritable army of indie/emo/punk clones sent to destroy us & usurp our throne. / A True Story: With an average age of just 21, A True Story is a 5 piece Rock/Pop band from Lanarkshire. With influences such as Taking Back Sunday & Something Corporate, their infectious piano based music coupled with their deep emotional lyrics & dashes of punk rock make them very difficult to ignore. Considering the band have only been together for fifteen months, they have performed at some of Glasgows most prestigious venues including The Glasgow Barfly, The Cathouse & The Renfrew Ferry. The Scottish National Air Guitar Championships 2006
Right, get into this. Air guitar requires more than rocking up pissed and going chungker-chungker out of time with both hands playing apparently different songs, indeed, instruments, for three minutes. Choose your tune carefully and know it - fans of The Young Ones will recall the disastrous camera work on the episode with Motorhead guesting, where there are two guitar solos and we're watching the wrong guitarist both times. Dire Straits suggested we check out Guitar George, who's strictly rhythm and doesn't want to make it cry or sing. We didn't think you wanted to either. No, no. Everyone knows that it's ridiculous solos that gets the chicks/chaps. You are allowed to rock up pissed, but effort, boys and girls, we want effort. We want fret-wanking, absurd poses, devil signs, crowd pointing, Gene Simmons tongue action, solos picked with the teeth, Eddie Van Halen fingertapping, fall to the knees and go twiddly-wee the way you have to when the break in The Final Countdown starts, axes spun, juggled, played behind the head, swung on the strap ZZ Top style, smashed into the ground, set fire to, followed by sullen stalking offstage like Steve Vai in the film Crossroads imaginary guitar histrionics. If you can manage that, there's a national prize in it. Plug in, let the light glint off your metal plectrum and blow the crowd away like that big amp in Back to the Future. Alright? Not half!

SKELETON BOB
(pictured) / OLDER AND FAR AWAY / + 1
Wistful country-tinged banjo-coustica with mouth organ and flat caps, singing of local heroes and regulars at The Doublet [the West End's best bar]. When they sing about being on a westbound train through dusty towns, and you realise it's probably Partick, Anniesland, Dalmuir... there's a splendid shiver down the spine. This is not provincialism, it's beautiful realism. Neatly worded, and full of nice musical surprises, like the aforementioned banjo kicking in, this is an organic treat, as completely satisfying as a Greggs pasty with proper ingredients. A troll online for Older And Far Away reveals they haven't sorted their website out yet, so suffice it to say that Halfrek recognizes Spike as William and he finds her familiar too, but both deny knowing each other.

She started to work in the recording studios at the age of ten with songwriters & producers as well as making appearances in prestigious venues such as the London Palladium, Wembley etc. Just over two years ago Samantha received an acoustic guitar as a Christmas present & took things from there. Samanthas brother John wwwmyspace.com/anicallthekingsmen is an amazing guitarist who Samantha would sit & watch for hours in admiration, then get him to teach her some chords!!!! Drive Carefully Records: THE SAILPLANES
(pictured) /THE KARA SEA (pictured) / GDANSK (pictured) / + Drive Carefully djs
The Sailplanes: Last year’s 'Season of False Dawns', the Sailplanes' brilliant mini-album, revealed a London band that sounded refreshingly distinctive and fully-formed. Thankfully their new EP, 'Books about Cities', offers more of the same frantic but melancholy art-rock, albeit art-rock in the older sense of the term - less the cartoonish posing of Franz and dullness of Bloc Party, more the genuinely pioneering spirit of Sleater-Kinney, Swells Maps, and Electrelane. 'Sideways On', 'Doom One', and the title track offer a thrilling combination of splintered guitars and urgent, yelped vocals, with added swathes of screeching electronic frequencies, while 'Black Cheroot' is a blistering instrumental that incorporates a Nick Cave passage at the end. In short, it’s brilliant, and represents the Sailplanes as being fully in control of their incendiary musical vision. / The Kara Sea: At the tender age of 22, Sarah Bradley, the lady behind The Kara Sea, finds herself with the surprising tag of industry veteran. However, a quick look at her CV soon puts any surprise to bed. Her latest project is thrown in amongst past exploits which include promoting, DJing and running a record label as well as her songwriting exploits. The metamorphosis of Bradley from Eskimo Girl into The Kara Sea is indicative of the maturity and finesse evident in her music. Rigid drum and synth beats complement the swirling melodies and poetic, sensitive vocals to make The Kara Sea a unique adventure in music. No longer an Eskimo Girl; the ice has melted and The Kara Sea is flowing. / Gdansk: Guitar-based fourpiece Gdansk are one of few bands to be fortunate enough to possess both the exuberance of youth and honed experience of the live scene. "We've all read your diary, we've all reviewed your poetry", waxes frontman Andrew Campbell over archetypically furious drums and grandiose guitar harmonies, in fan favourite 'Short Fiction'. As far as Gdansk are concerned, reviews are all glowing with enthusiasm and excitement about a a young act with wisdom and talent boyond their years. Editors may be the more recognised Interpolalikes, but gdansk were there first and do it better. One to look out for.

JIM BOB (pictured) / YER MAW (pictured)
National hero to millions for flattening Philip Schofield as the thin half of comedy pop duo 'Carter USB', Jim Bob Morrison has 'moved along', as Trisha might put it. [Terrible and factually inaccurate tabloid intro] No, but look! Jim's made a record about school. With a proper school orchestra! Like Ray Davies [or Roger Waters]. Owing to European Child Labour Laws, he will probably be touring the tunes off 'School' with minimalist accompaniment [i.e. Jim Bob's guitar] and will probably, if you are here for currently popular and not ex-indie giant James Morrison, regale you with a few bars of 'You give me something', but with the lyrics changed to be about venereal disease. The new songs ease off the often bilious rhetoric of the back catalogue, benefitting from the recorders and chalk dust vibe, the kind of songs you'd be quite willing to participate in at choir practice, in particular the 'rude one we're not allowed to do', which in this case is called 'Mrs Fucking MacMurphy (teaches Food Technology)', about a sweary Mary teacher.... There may be a sneak preview of the tunes he's writing for an actual pantomime, written by noted playsmith Mark Ravenhill ['Shopping & Fucking'], so come primed for affectionate heckling along the lines of 'it's behind you!' 'what is?' 'you career!' 'oh no it isn't...' etc etc etc...

OHHH! / JOHN NOMA / PIGSCUM
(pictured) / DEAD OR AMERICAN (pictured)
Ohhh!!! [right number of H and!s] is another from a 'spack' school of ADHD beats and tampered with samples, making noises come out of a laptop the like of which would have normal humans reaching for the helpline number. Like be-bop legends being forced to battle for their lives using modified versions of their instruments against pixellated alien warships, in the Tron/Independence Day/Blue Note crossover that dismally, criminally, never was - until Ohhh!!! hoved into view, a shocked expression on everyone's faces. Awesome. Like Duke Ellington telling Richard D. James he's been crap since 1998, in a loud club, on the dancefloor. Also, John Noma, which is the soundtrack to a retro-futurist 1970s exploration of a day in the life of a drain cleaner on the moon. Along with [if that's not the wrong phrase] other experimentalists [e.g. Lanterns, Birds of Delay, Kylie Minoise] Noma is into making a meal out of discounted noise, or making things that sound like noise into beautiful, or unsettling, or both, abstract sound canvases. Very much for the iPod on the Space Shuttle commute. I have written about them so much I will not tire you with further chat about Pigscum and Dead Or American's less electronic, more barbarous guitar and vox onslaught, save to state that they are in places so heavy and metallic that, were the bands to be a gigantic Transformer, a single ball-bearing in their toe would be a sphere of steel the size of recently demoted 'dwarf planet' Pluto. SNOWBLOOD / KYLIE MINOISE / TAKE A WORM FOR A WALK WEEK

The blurb for Spank Magic Lodge by Kylie Minoise, on the old my spays dot com, is the sort of demented shit I can't get enough of: 'Like being hypnotised, set on fire, then thrown from a 3rd storey window into a swimming pool filled with broken glass then the process repeated until even your own mother wouldn't recognise you!!!' Now imagine that this was being done by transvestite bodybuilders to Lemmy from Motorhead, forever, and you have the sound of 'Sick New Craze OK'. That's the way I like it, baby. Also eviltastically demented, Take A Worm For A Walk Week have a track called 'Lumber Puncture', which is possibly a typo, but the more I hear it, the more it is indeed like getting a pine through the base of the spine. Gnash! What tartrazine crazed perverts stalk our streets with feral cats straining at the leash looking for action? Snowblood cap the evening... with devices procured illegally from a fixer in the former Yugoslavia. The evening is then interred in three thousand fathoms of oil-filled water, lacerated warty-faced old rock monsters descending slowly past enfeebled seagulls, and assorted drowning members of Pink Floyd. These images stem from the unhurried Sunno)))-mannered sludge of the 'blood's tunes, a marked contrast to the caffeine frenzy of the other two bands, even a bit Slint in aspic. Ace!

The fantastic No Kilter return... In denial of the existence of 'kilter', this is beamless music that makes you beam, makes you want to fabricate zines, take photos for websites. Fucked metronome drum punctuates enervating stop-start 0-60 in less than a second guitars what collide off each other in a search for the god particle. We note that it already lies within, obviously. There's the breakdown in the middle of the song Save your Saviour which explains this a little better, voices harmonise over chocolate fountain guitar trickle, surge of noise, eldritch scream... the crunch has arrived, what is your agenda? Possibly keeping a safe distance from fellow travellers in Ernest, who are intent on 'buggering your face'. While their website is a scrunched up on the floor by the bed tissue of distortion and sweaty man love, the songs reveal a soft, sensitive centre - doubtless to be tampered with in some manner. Tunes: delicious, more linear than the Kilters, but mined from the same seam and exercising a fantastic restraint that makes the pumping surges of the choruses all the more eye-watering. Darren McIlroy is a Glaswegian singer/songwriter who has been active in the live acoustic scene for 4 years now. Darren's guitar style is very much his own, entwining his unigue guitar picking style with story based lyrics of every day life and matter. Since hitting the scene, Darren has played many high profile gigs including the Tron Theatre in Glasgow, and has had his song Babydoll released on the compilation album "Decade" through Burning Haggis Records. Darren is finishing the final touches on his first studio album Suicide Coast which will be released later this year. / iamchemist has been described as a "disturbing musical electro-indie experience"  by himself. Armed with nothing but a keytar, a sense of occasion, and a truly remarkable affinity for the greater pleasures in life, this gig promises to be a good one for iamchemist, who has plans afoot to spread wings and create elation, panic and all out stalking-mania, the likes of which have not been seen in a while, and even then only from fans of boy bands. His greatest achievements in life so far include "looking great in sunglasses" and "thrusting the keytar forth as a giant musical penis" There's not many of us can claim that. Catch him now before his keytar gets flaccid! / Tender Mercies: Rounding off this exquisite bill, Tender Mercies make a welcome return to the live music scene in Glasgow. The band have been away for a weekend or two working on various side projects following the release of their debut EP 'Stories' on Swedish label Evergreen Terrace last year, but are now back to grace the Note stage once more .
